It seems the rumors last night were true - local four/five-star shooting guard Dion Wiley has committed to the University of Maryland. The Terps beat out Georgetown, Indiana, and NC State, among others, for the Oxon Hill shooting guard.
Wiley, a 6'3", 193 pound shooting guard, is one of the top prospects in the country - ESPN has him as the 22nd-best player while Rivals and 24/7 each have him hovering around #50. The addition boosts Maryland's 247 composite team 2014 class rankings from 19th to fifth in the nation.
Wiley joins guard Melo Trimble in this year's class, giving them two shooting options with a great stroke. It appears that after shoring up their future at forward in last year's recruiting class with Charles Mitchell, Shaquille Cleare and Jake Layman, they are attempting to do the same at guard this year with Wiley, Trimble, and possibly Phil Booth.
It also works out pretty perfectly with Maryland's long-term plans. Nick Faust and Dez Wells will both be juniors next year, making them senior when it's Wiley's time to come around. That will give him and Trimble a year in the program to learn the ropes before being called upon for serious contribution, and then the sky is the limit with the two of them.Last year, Wiley averaged 17.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 3.2 steals, and shot 52 percent from the floor at Potomac High School. He plays his AAU ball at Team Takeover. Get Wiled, Terp Nation.
Here's a video interviewing Wiley intersperesed with some highlights. There is also some pretty sexual saxophone stuff going on.
