High School Highlights:
How'd he get to College Park?
Maryland was the first school to offer Chandler Burkett a scholarship, but he instead committed to Florida International. After FIU surprisingly fired Mario Cristobal, Burkett took an official visit to College Park and ended up switching his commitment to the Terps. He was also offered by South Florida and Troy, among others, and was recruited by Lyndon Johnson.
Burkett played defensive end and wide receiver in high school - an odd combination, to say the least - and was first team all-state as a senior (as a junior, he was first team all-district and all-county but second team all-state). He was also named the New Herald Bay's County Defensive Player of the Year, and helped lead Bozeman to a school-record eight wins.
Nickname:
"Burk It"
Career Highlight:
County Defensive Player of the Year
Dream Season:
Puts on weight while excelling on the practice squad.
2013 Prospectus:
Yesterday we talked about Malik Jones needing to put on weight to play at the Division I level, and Chandler Burkett is five pounds lighter than Jones is. So, like Jones, it's very unlikely that we'll see Burkett on the field for the Terps this season.
What's most impressive about Burkett is his speed off the edge - as we mentioned earlier, he was a wideout in high school - and the hope is that he'll be able to keep that burst even with the added weight. Both Burkett and Jones have a year to get acclimated into the program and learn behind the old guard (Andre Monroe and Keith Bowers) and the new (Quinton Jefferson and Roman Braglio) - and the latter is who they're going to be competing with a few years down the line.
