Local Star Quarterback Will Ulmer Commits to Maryland

Maryland learned the hard way last year that there's no such thing as having too many quarterbacks, and it appears they are taking it to heart. Via IMS, they have received some fantastic news for their 2014 class - top local quarterback Will Ulmer will be a Terp. Ulmer is Maryland's second commitment for the class, after three-star offensive lineman Jared Cohen.

Ulmer is a four-star quarterback on both Rivals and 24/7 - he's given three stars by Scout and is yet to be rated by ESPN. Rivals has him as the tenth-best dual threat quarterback in the country, while Scout puts him as the #36 quarterback overall. 24/7 has the most exciting rankings - #3 dual threat quarterback, #5 player in D.C., and #203 overall prospect in the country.

Ulmer is a local kid - from D.C., he goes to St. John's College High School. With the departure of Pete White, Maryland was left devoid of Cadets, and with Ulmer in comes a big get, going from one Kevin Plank alma mater to another. CORRECTION: I forgot about Dre.

His offer sheet is perhaps even more impressive than his recruiting rankings - Nebraska, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Miami, Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and just about every where in between. There's a healthy dab of both ACC and B1G schools in there, so Maryland has managed to stick it to both their current and future conference rivals simultaneously.

So, yes, what obviously stands out at first - he's fast, he's strong, and he seems to run as if he doesn't care who's going to try and tackle them, because they are going to fail and fail miserably. Also notable is his pure running ability - Ulmer appears to have great instincts and doesn't allow the missed tackle opportunities to become actual opportunities.

What's most impressive, however, might be his throwing ability - solely due to the fact of how great he is on the ground, you don't entirely expect it. His first throw (about 1:05 at that video) doesn't have much pop, but it's scarily accurate. The second one (where the video finally points us to him for some reason, as if we can't identify the quarterback) is pretty great - he has some serious zing on the long ball, and places it right where it needs to be.

Last year, he had 1,245 yards passing and 1,412 yards rushing, with 25 total touchdowns (15 of them rushing). Maryland and Randy Edsall just made a huge local score, and added to what should be an exciting quarterback competition in a few years.
