Maryland Minute 5.10.12: Parker Lands at Loyola

Bracken says Parker transfers to Loyola
Good to see. Big fan of Loyola as long as Patsos is there, and they were pretty great as far as MAAC teams go. Parker should be a bonus, and you'd think he'd thrive against that level of competition. No matter the struggles he had here, he's certainly going to be on another level athletically against Canisius and Rider.

Do Florida State and the Big 12 make a perfect match? | Dr. Saturday
It's spring, which means the conference realignment chatter is clicking into high gear. It's like clockwork. It's been going on here for a few days, and I'm fully expecting it to only get more intense. The new lead discussion topic is FSU to the Big 12, which would give them substantially more TV money and the possibility to create their own "Seminole Network," ala the Longhorn Network for Texas. Didn't buy it at first, but they're running a deficit of $2mil and have to cut their budget "pretty dramatically." That'll make an extra $5mil a year look a lot more attractive. And if they do leave, regardless of whether Clemson follows, it's a good bet chaos will follow in the ACC. (To which I say: FOLLOW ME! FOLLOW ME TO THE BIG TEN! And yes, I know you all hate me for saying it.)

Promising Maryland basketball recruiting class will get chance to make early impact
Nice piece from Jeff Barker, if a little boilerplate. But no mention of Dodd, and a specific mention of it being a five-man class. Obviously Turgeon can't talk about him if he hasn't signed, so this means he hasn't signed, but you'd think Barker would make note of that, wouldn't you? He doesn't. So is that an oversight, or is he prepping?

Finally, a new target?
This is a day or two old, but I was double-checking the rounds and found this buried deep in a Zagsblog post about a high school all-star game. Top-100 forward Jermaine Lawrence, who plays HS ball in New Jersey, won the MVP of that event, and hey, look who he's listing:

Still, the list of schools now involved includes Kansas, Maryland, Syracuse, Florida, UConn, Villanova, Louisville, St. John’s, UCLA and UNLV.

I'll wait until I see a more trimmed list to get excited or anything, but we're in a recruiting desert at the moment so I consider it newsworthy. He's 6-10 but has a bit of Evan Smotrycz in him, with the ability to step out and hit jumpers. No idea if there's an offer or just some prelim interest, but keep an eye out.

Similar situation, different team for unseeded Terps - Washington Times
A lacrosse preview from Patrick Stevens. Points out that the team that made the run from unseeded to title game last season was vastly different from this year's bunch, which might make it a difficult feat to repeat.

Maryland baseball firmly on the bubble
When's the last time Maryland baseball made the NCAA tournament? Any guesses, anyone?

1971. We, friends, are the Duke football of baseball. That Bakich has built this program up to even bubble status is something impressive. Now, pray he doesn't take another job. (h/t umcp96 in the FanPosts)

The first Terp Awards show - DC Sports Bog
A giant gold Testudo, rapping A.J. Francis, and a flash mob. Why wasn't I invited?

ACC spring game attendance numbers - ESPN
Maryland checks in at second-to-last with a nice round 1000, just ahead of BC. Which had ... 200. I know I should be fretting about Maryland having one-fifth the attendance of Wake-freaking-Forest, but, damn, BC, that's just sad.

Top recruit Montrezl Harrell asks for his release from Virginia Tech
This after Dorian Finney-Smith transferred. Harrell was never going to be a centerpiece at this level, but he was big, strong, and hyperathletic - certainly could've been a difference-maker. Let me know how firing Greenberg works out for you, Tech.
