Sam Cassell Jr. Recommits to Maryland

In expected-but-still-nice news, Maryland basketball picked up their sixth (!) commitment of the 2012 basketball class, as Sam Cassell Jr. recommitted to the school Saturday night before the Capital Classic.

Cassell originally committed back in late March, but apparently did so without Dad's knowledge, backing out and taking some visits. He ended up narrowing his list down to Maryland and South Florida, and will head to College Park next season.

Ben B. talked about Cassell in great depth here, so go ahead and read that if you want to get re-familiarized with the guard, but here are the footnotes:

  • Yes, his dad is former NBA All-Star and three-time NBA Champion (yes, really) Sam Cassell.
  • Cassell Jr. is a three-star recruit from Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts and is from Baltimore, and plays for the Baltimore Elite AAU squad. Rivals ranks him as the 34th best shooting guard and 146th best player in the class.
  • He's a combo guard who can play the one or two, and is known as a great shooter who should eventually score at a pretty solid rate.
  • More than anything, it provides immediate guard depth (at both spots), and is a possible answer for the future there.
Here are some highlights. Ben B. will be dropping in later with much more detail and insight:
