Mitch McGary is probably Maryland's biggest, most important target, certainly in the 2012 class. He's now one step closer to a commitment, having cut his list of dozens of offers down to six: Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Duke, Kentucky, and, yes, Maryland.
"I stayed low in July but I talked to coaches on Facebook and stuff like that," said McGary. "Some of the schools like Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky, they've got great coaches there. I like Michigan and Maryland in the rebuilding stage and they gave me good vibes. Florida's pretty good and they do a lot of similar things with guys like me who are versatile."
McGary has said several times that Maryland is recruiting him the hardest, which means Mark Turgeon and the Terrapins should be in the thick of things. That's a mighty impressive list - particularly Duke, UNC, and Kentucky, which I don't need to tell you to fear - and picking out a leader there is probably impossible at this stage. Michigan might be a little below the rest, but McGary has supposedly been very positive about the Blue.
It's no surprise that McGary will be a huge battle. Maryland's new staff, particularly Bino Ranson, have gone all-in on him, but he's a major target for the blue-bloods as well as Florida, which is always strong on the trail and may appeal to a "beach bum" like McGary.
He's said in the past that he wants to decide in November, so this shouldn't last too long. I fully expect it to feel like an eternity, though.
