It's been a long time coming, but Maryland-Texas has seemingly, finally, really become "official."
First was the rumor. Then the quick clarification. Then the seeming confirmation. And now comes the more believable confirmation, ironically via Twitter:
Texas Longhorns finalize football series with Maryland in 2017 and 2018. In Austin in 2017 and at FedEx Field in 2018.
And yes, the Twitter of the guy that broke the Pac-10 expansion stuff is definitely more reliable than a single sentence in a medium-sized local paper.
[Update by Ben Broman, 09/22/10 5:16 PM EDT - It's official, via Maryland's official site. Terps in Austin on September 2, 2017, back in DC on September 1, 2018.]
Anyway, that's a long time away in the future, which is probably necessary to keep it competitive - there's no way Maryland would be close if this game went down anytime soon. It also sets up a nice little backstory for Mike Leach's first game against a Texas team at his new school...oh, nevermind.
This also leaves open a large period of time between the Notre Dame game in 2012 and the Texas games in 2017 and 2018 to get that Navy rivalry established. Mr. Anderson, we're waiting.
