I've been driving the bandwagon for Torrey Smith for quite some time now, so it shouldn't be any surprise that this news makes me happy: Smith was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list today. He's the second Terp to make an award's preseason watch list, joining Alex Wujciak for the Nagurski.
Maryland's star WR before Smith, Darrius Heyward-Bey, was on the watch list twice. While Smith has been arguably more productive than Heyward-Bey was, he hasn't gotten nearly as much national attention, so it's good to finally see him get some. (As a sidenote, no Terp has ever won the award; Smith is probably one year too early.)
Of course, everyone in the ACC knows about Smith, which is why he was first team All-ACC as both a wide receiver and kick returner. He's fifth ever for Maryland in all-purpose yardage, and will almost certainly be in second by the end of this year (Lamont Jordan holds #1, and Torrey should also challenge for that). He only needs 53 catches to surpass Hey-Bey on the career catches list, which would put him at third in school history.
51 wide recievers made the watch list, so in and of itself it's not the biggest deal in the world. Still, publicity is always awesome. First step for the Heisman candidacy?
