Maryland Minute 8.21.09 - Elite 24 Doesn't Turn Out, Football Notes, More

Tobias Harris cut his list, but you probably won't be able to see him - or anyone else - play in the Elite 24 game.
Tobias Harris cut his list, but you probably won't be able to see him - or anyone else - play in the Elite 24 game.

Sorry for the light posting today, I've been absurdly busy.

Elite 24: Pretty Much a Disaster
Well, this isn't good.

The Boost Mobile Elite 24 game was just moved because of rain from Rucker Park to the Gauchos Gym. I’m sitting here courtside and Rice coach Moe Hicks just told me he’s looking for a power cord.

"If I don’t get this cord, there ain’t gonna be no game," he said.

ESPN is out so there will be no TV coverage on Saturday.

Terrible. This was a shot for Terrence Ross to impress scouts, a chance for him to make an impression on guys like Terrence Jones or C.J. Leslie, and a chance to watch the top targets on TV. Boo.

D1scourse has an interesting (and bad) note about early big games
Basically, Maryland doesn't fare too well against ranked teams in season openers. Wonderful news!

Tobias Harris Kind of Cuts His List
He only eliminated two, I believe. But that's progress, right?

During a video interview with SNY.tv that will air in the coming days, Torrel Harris said the family will have in-home visits with the following schools: Kentucky, Syracuse, St. John’s, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Maryland, Louisville, Georgia Tech and UConn.

...

"Maybe [late September] we’ll cut it down it to like five schools and take the official visits," Tobias added.

WRs Not Coming Really Coming Along
I'm still not at all worried about this. There's simply too much depth at WR to not find a topflight guy by week 5. Even if that's not Torrey Smith - the favorite at the beginning of camp - Adrian Cannon will be good.

Q&A With WR Coach Lee Hull
Basically a must-read. That is all.

Torrey Smith's "Fall" Explained...Maybe
Perhaps?

"He wasn't catching the ball as well as I think he can," coach Friedgen said after practice today. "I went to talk to him and said, 'What is the deal?' " Smith replied that he had been taking an online class this summer -- the coach hadn't realized Smith was doing that. Smith had been working on his studies in the evenings, then getting up for two-a-days in the heat. That can take a toll. The class has ended and Fridge is hopeful that Smith will return to last season's form -- or better.

German DL To Officially Visit Maryland
Probably a project, but it'd be cool to have him on the team if only because he's, y'know, German.

Defensive tackle Bjoern Werner (Salisbury, Conn), originally from Berlin, Germany, is slated to make official visits to Cal, Oregon and Maryland in September, ESPN affiliate Web site InsideMDSports.com reports.

...

The Terps are one of his favorites at the moment. Salisbury School coach Chris Adamson said, "He loved Maryland."
