Maryland Minute 7.27.09 - Ten Wins and AAU

Chris Turner: Maryland is a "10-win team" - Sun
This is what you want to hear from your quarterback.

Turner continued: "I think we're easily a 10-win team, and that's our goal this year. We're not playing around this year. We're not here to just win eight games and go to an average bowl."

Also, the recent recruiting methods may have been explained:

"I'm at a point in my life where I don't want to deal with these entitled athletes. I want to deal with people who want to be successes in life," Friedgen said.

Sin City Sensation: Terrell Stoglin - MaxPreps
MaxPreps continuing the Stog love.

Terrell Stoglin (6-1, G, Sr.), Pump-N-Run Elite/Santa Rita (Tucson, Ariz.) Saw Stoglin just once, but the Arizona guard kept Pump-N-Run Elite in the game against Grassroots Canada with big threes and competent ballhandling against unrelenting pressure in pool play. The Maryland verbal is more combo guard than true point, but his scoring comes within the flow of the game and he does look to set up teammates.

Harris Named MOP of Super Showcase
I think it'll be near impossible for Harris to be anything other than a top 10 prospect at this point.

Team Finals [sic], Mike Gilchrist against City Rocks, Tobias Harris. While Gilchrist has been advertised as the best player regardless of class, Harris would silence the naysayers by dropping 20 points along with 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, leading the City Rocks to a 68-64 win.

Sporting News - Fridge Lost 90 Pounds
We already knew it, but it's good to see it getting media coverage:

Fan will be seeing less of Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen on the sidelines. About 90 pounds, and counting, less. Said Maryland quarterback Chris Turner: "We all support it. We think it's great. He's more energetic. And I think he's happier."

It's great to see him shedding the pounds, both as a person and as coach.

More on Harris from Super Showcase
He's not done:

The star of the show for City Rocks as usual was Tobias Harris. Harris did a good job of facing up 2011 big, Mikael Hopkins, and taking him to the rack. Also Harris rebounded the ball well and showed a good feel for how to pass. Beyond that, Harris had the game winning floater down one with only seconds remaining.

Oladipo No Longer Listing Terps
This had to happen at some point - Maryland already has two guards, and there's just no more room for another. I still like Oladipo, though, and I'll like him in college.

- Team Takeover wing Victor Oladipo gave NBE his school list of Indiana, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Providence, George Mason, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Clemson, UNC-C and Missouri after the contest.

Yet another way AAU types scam pro coaches: pricey packets - The Dagger
Yet another way AAU types scam pro coaches: pricey packets. And yet another way I hate AAU basketball. I wish all of the NCAA coaches would ban together and form an alliance against these slime bags... [from homertuck, obviously - I find myself in a growing love affair with the damn thing]

Alex Kirk at Showcase
Terp target Alex Kirk appears to have performed well at the Super Showcase:

In a battle between Houston Hoops and the New York Gauchos, the Hoops frontcourt tandem of Alex Kirk and Tobi Oyedeji was very solid. Kirk showed the inside out game that has helped his stock soar, and Oyedeji did the dirty work inside converting with strength and athleticism.
Alex Kirk has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, USC, Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford, Cal, Nex Mexico, Oklahoma State, and Colordo. He is also getting a lot of interest from Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest.
