Maryland Minute 2.9.12: The Zaching Craze Spreads

via www.washingtonpost.com

Happy Stefonukkah, all. There's an open thread for that in the FanPosts.

Everyone at Maryland is ‘Zaching’ - DC Sports Bog
Good to see everyone in the athletics community rally around a cause - even SVP and Torrey Smith get into the act. Heartwarming.

‘Living the dream’ - The Diamondback
As yet, the best Lederer piece I've seen.

Coordinators Visit with Media
Linked to a few stories yesterday, but these are the full interviews of both Locksley and Stewart. RTWT. Have to say, I like Stewart's philosophy:

Both have been known to be pressure defenses and when we talk about pressure defense, we're not talking about blitzing every play, that's not what pressure is. Pressure is when the receivers get ready to catch the balls, the DBs are in a place where they can contest every catch. Pressure is when the linebackers are showing at the line scrimmage and the quarterback doesn't know out of those seven guys at the line of scrimmage who is coming and who is not. That's kind of how I got to where I am defensively with the three four defense.

Basically the football version of Gary's pressure? Works for me.

Maryland Minute 2.8.12 - Bino in Texas to Visit Shaq, Harrison Twins

Fun Fact: If you Google image search "Harrison Twins" you will find that there is another set of Harrison twins. It does not appear that they play basketball.

Bino in Texas to Visit Shaq, Harrison Twins; Turgeon expected next week
Per the guys at IMS. This, my friends, is good news. Go get em' Bino.

Danny O’Brien’s decision likely to have major impact on Maryland football - The Washington Post
A nice roundup from the Post on what an O'Brien departure would mean. DOB has been rumored to be headed out for a little while now. Not sure when a decision will be made but he's supposedly going to talk it over with his family this weekend.

Stefon Diggs set to make college choice Friday, with Florida believed to be leading Maryland as his most likely destination - The Washington Post
When's the last time there's been this much drama surrounding a Maryland football recruitment? It seems to be a Maryland/Florida battle. We'll find out for sure where Diggs will be playing tomorrow.

Stefon Diggs To Announce Friday Night: Where Will He Sign? - SBNation.com
Bud Elliott, who's opinion I really trust, thinks that Diggs will end up at Maryland. He gives a good overall view on Diggs' recruitment. What say you, Terps fans? - Dave

Maryland Coach Randy Edsall grilled by WTEM’s ‘Sports Reporters’ - Terrapins Insider - The Washington Post
Andy Pollin and Steve Czaban absolutely gutted Edsall in an interview Tuesday. Got to give Coach some credit for facing these questions on air, and Andy and Steve for having the stones to ask them. - Pete

Mid-Atlantic Bias: Could Terrell Stoglin become Maryland’s all-tme leading scorer?
Interesting question. Mid-Atlantic Bias breaks down the numbers.

'Zaching': Maryland Teen With Brain Cancer Inspires Web Phenomenon - Columbia, MD Patch
If you haven't read this piece on Terps' basketball manager Zach Lederer, you need to. Now. And the students need to start "Zaching" at basketball games. As do the players. Such an amazing, compelling story. Best of luck, Zach!

Maryland’s Alex Len makes progress as he adjusts to ACC basketball - The Washington Post
Nice piece on Len as he continues to adjust to ACC basketball.

Maryland Minute 2.2.12: Awesome (and Old) Stefon Diggs and Wes Brown Interview

Ah screw it, let's just make it Stefon Diggs week. #StayHomeStefon (Image via media.scout.com)

Old Stefon Diggs and Wes Brown interview
Best. Out of date quotes. Ever.

Diggs: We go hand-in-hand on the field. It's not Wes Brown. It's not Stefon Diggs. It's Brown & Diggs.
OK, let's play that angle. Are you guys a package deal heading to college? Do you want to play with each other?

Diggs: Yes, that's the idea.

Seriously though, read it all. It's a nice piece.

Much like the Harrisons recruitment, there are going to be bigger factors in this one than just Wes and Stefon's friendship ... but I certainly take it over nothing.

After unexpected break from football, Quinton Jefferson happy to join Terps
The forgotten recruit. Quinton Jefferson, Pennsylvania defensive end, was originally a 2012 recruit who had to greyshirt due to an undisclosed medical condition. Matt Bracken reminds us he's still here. I'm guessing he'll have to be converted to an OLB in the 3-4, as he only weighed in at 225 his senior year.

Maryland Minute - 01.30.12 - Is Terps Guard Terrell Stoglin Helping Other Teams With Poor Shots?

Maryland guard Terrell Stoglin (12) drives past Virginia Tech guard Robert Brown in the second half of an NCAA college basketball game in College Park, Md., Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. Stoglin contributed a game-high 28 points to Maryland's 73-69 win. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)

January 30th is a pretty awesome day to be born. Just sayin'...

Tracking the Terps: Does Terrell Stoglin play 'for both teams?' - herald-mail.com
Interesting comment by Seth Greenberg about Terrell Stoglin after his team's 73-69 loss to the Terps on Saturday. He basically said Stoglin is good, but some of his bad shots let Tech get back into that game.

WaPo's in-depth profile of Shaquille Cleare
Whoa. Good stuff. Shaq seems like a really likable kid, a giant teddy bear of a center. Maryland is a very good place for him, I'm guessing. -Ben B.

New Terps defensive coordinator Stewart to earn $350,000 - Washington Times
The only thing that ticks me off about this is the radio and tv appearance stuff. If he's not allowed to make them, it's ridiculous and someone in the AD's office should be fired for letting this happen again.

Former Terps offensive coordinator Gary Crowton to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers - baltimoresun.com
Gary Crowton went to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. That should tell you something, Edsall, that no one wanted him and you probably shouldn't have hired him in the first place.

Interesting piece on Len's growing pains.

Maryland Minute 1.24.12: It's Gary Williams Week

Not Duke Week.

A sneak preview of Gary Williams Court
Shoutout to broadcastterp to getting up a FanPost on this earlier. It does look a little plain, and Gary's signature isn't quite as flowing as I thought, but there's not much you can do with something like this. If you don't want to see it, don't click.

Gary Williams on Maryland-Georgetown
Yes please.

"I think Georgetown and Maryland should play," Williams said. "I think it will happen, I really do. With me out of there, and the II out of there, I think it’s gonna happen. We played, if you remember, we played at U.S. Air Arena the last game, so that was the sticking point."

Also, it's cool that he calls him "the II." But yeah, this needs to happen.

Court-naming ceremony begins at 8:40
Seen a lot of people ask this, so here's the answer: fans "are encouraged to be in their seats by 8:40" if you want to see the ceremony.

Maryland Minute - 01.18.11 - Looking at Alex Len's Struggles in ACC Play

Maryland center Alex Len, right, of Ukraine, strips the ball from Cornell forward Shonn Miller, center, as he goes up for a shot in front of Maryland center Berend Weijs, of the Netherlands, in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in College Park, Md., Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012. Not too much going on as Maryland doesn't play again until Saturday against Temple. The Lady Terps take on Wake tonight at 7:00 at Comcast. Now, onto the MM...

Terps' Alex Len ineffective in conference play - Washington Times
Len has struggled since conference play began. He needs to elevate his game if Maryland wants to have success in the ACC this season.

Tracking the Terps: What's happened to Alex Len? - baltimoresun.com
More on Len's struggles. When I watched him in the FSU game, he seemed rattled and every time he got the ball, he either tried to move before it got securely in his hands or he let it slip through his hands. The only time I thought he looked comfortable is when he had that running hook shot in the paint that gave Maryland their only lead.

Technician's ACC Men's Basketball Power Rankings - Sports - Technician - North Carolina State University
I've never heard of this site, but they did a good ACC power ranking so I thought it was worth sharing. I think having Maryland around #6 sounds about right to me.

Highlights from King's State of the Union - New Jersey Nets Blog - ESPN New York

"King said they told second-round pick Jordan Williams sending him to the NBDL is "not a demotion. It's a chance for you to play."

Yeah...this has spurred a lively debate in a fanpost, but I wanted to bring it to everyone's attention who hasn't seen it. I wish Jordan all the best, but he better get himself back into shape...fast.

Maryland Minute - 01.16.12 - Looking at Padgett's Growth Under Turgeon

Maryland forward James Padgett (35) shoots over Illinois guard Sam Maniscalco in the second half of an NCAA college basketball game in College Park, Md., Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011. Illinois won 71-62, despite 16 points from Padgett. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)

That was a tough loss to FSU, but I think Maryland has the potential to be a pretty decent team, one that will hopefully end up playing at a level higher than I expected at the start of the season. Part of the reason for that higher level of play has been junior forward James Padgett.

James Padgett is Mark Turgeon's biggest reclamation project - baltimoresun.com
Great piece on Turgeon's impact on James Padgett, who's development this season isn't getting enough attention, IMO.
