Football Recruiting

Quotes, Notes, Photos, and Videos from Stefon Diggs' Maryland Commitment

So ... yesterday was a little crazy, wasn't it? Or, uh, a lotta crazy. Flat-out insane.

With good reason, of course. Stefon Diggs, one of the biggest recruits the D.C. area has ever put out and one of the best players in the country, committing to Maryland in an upset is a pretty big deal. But in the euphoria that followed, a lot got lost in the shuffle. So, in a poor attempt to emulate the Steinz, here's a recap of all the awesome that fell through the cracks last night.

First up, videos:

Huge: Star Local Receiver Stefon Diggs Commits to Maryland

Follow me! Follow me to freedom!

I'm not convinced there's such a thing as a program-changing commitment in football, but Stefon Diggs to Maryland is probably as close as it gets.

The consensus five-star, top-ten Good Counsel wide receiver just pulled the trigger for the Terrapins today at local College Park bar Looney's, over Ohio State, Auburn, and Florida, among a host of other offers. Diggs is reported to have said, "I wanna win championships, I wanna win bowl games, and what better place to do that than this city," before putting on his Maryland hat. He finished with "I wouldn't be nowhere without my city, so I want to finish it with y'all. ... I'll see y'all in the fall."

He was the best uncommitted recruit in the country on every major ranking service, as well as the consensus #2 wide receiver in the country. His commitment marks a potential sea change in the fortunes of Maryland's currently-woebegone football program.

Diggs is an electric wide receiver with elite speed and escapability, a true home-run threat every time he touches the ball. Rivals often compares him to DeSean Jackson, and while that's not a perfect comparison - Diggs is a little bigger, Jackson a little faster in terms of straight-line speed - it isn't far off. He loves the spotlight, plays with intensity and swagger, and can be a game-changer either as a receiver or a returner.

Oh Boy: Josh Barr Says Stefon Diggs to Maryland, Hype Building

via 1.bp.blogspot.com

I've been shouting to anyone who would listen over the past week to, for the love of god, not listen to all of the random people who aren't recruiting analysts who have "sources" telling them Stefon Diggs is going somewhere. I can honestly point you to a dozen different "journalists" claiming a dozen different things about Diggs' recruitment. Anyone who is claiming with certitude that they know where Diggs is going is either unaware of the complexity of the situation, working on bad info, or trolling for page views.

That said, if there were two journos who'd know what's up, it'd be Mike Farrell first and Josh Barr second. Farrell is saying the Terps likely lead. And Barr has thrown caution to the wind and just gone ahead and called the race.

All-Met Defensive Player of the Year Stefon Diggs of Good Counsel is poised to announce that he will accept a scholarship offer to play for Maryland, according to a source with knowledge of Diggs's plans.

Diggs had planned to announce his college choice Friday on Comcast SportsNet, but a station spokesman said Thursday that Diggs had backed out of the arrangement. While Diggs still might make his choice known Friday, it was not immediately clear when or where that will take place.

Diggs, a star receiver and cornerback, is believed to also be strongly considering Florida and Ohio State. Auburn is also among his final choices. At this point, nothing would surprise those who have closely followed Diggs's recruitment.

That final graf should probably be a big enough grain of salt for you to not take this at 100% face value, and it seems that Barr is still hedging a bit - with good reason, of course, because for all we know Diggs will wake up tomorrow morning and decide to go to Oregon State or some other sufficiently random school. (Side note: no, he won't.) Point is, this is still fluid, and even if it was entirely decided, there's been enough misdirection that you shouldn't be putting 100% faith in any source.

Still, there's a lot of smoke pointing Maryland's direction. While I won't tell you to go out and buy your Stefon Diggs #2 Maryland Pride uni just yet, you should know that this isn't just a possibility - we're getting very close to likelihood status.

So Friday should be fun, huh?

Star Local Receiver Stefon Diggs Making Announcement Friday, Televised on CSN

via l.yimg.com

Ladies and gentlemen, we are full in the throes of Stefon Diggs Week. His visit to Maryland last Saturday seemed to go pretty well, and now we're simply biding time until his decision goes public. Which, unless anything unexpected goes down, will happen at 10:00 on Friday, televised live on CSN.

As expected, Diggs is choosing between Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, and Maryland - the link also listed Cal, but Tosh Lupoi went to Washington and they didn't get a visit - and all four of those teams can claim to have been considered media leaders at some point. The Terps got the last visit, though, and their time in the media spotlight is coming now. I'll say now what I've said all along: when all four schools think they have good chances, which is the case here, odds are that Diggs either doesn't know what he wants to do yet or has been telling people what they want to hear, which means this is all guesswork. Regardless, Maryland has a real chance at pulling this off, and that's saying something.

And by the way: the fact that he's announcing on the local television station, as opposed to going on ESPN or doing it at Good Counsel, might mean something, right? I know we got burnt this way before with Antonio Logan-El, but I'll take whatever I can.

Anyway, if you're jonesing for Diggs - and I know I am; in fact, I'm more excited about Diggs on Friday than I am about Clemson tonight or Duke on Saturday - these highlights made the rounds last weekend and are predictably sensational. If you haven't seen Diggs play yet, give 'em a whirl.

PSA: Stefon Diggs Visiting Maryland on Saturday

You have your duty.

So, yeah, Wednesday was kind of awful. You know what isn't awful? Getting a visit from this fella.

Electric Good Counsel wide receiver, consensus five-star, and the best 2012 prospect still on the board, Stefon Diggs, will be visiting Maryland this Saturday, which nicely coincides with the North Carolina home game in basketball. We already knew that this was in the works, but we've gotten some extra confirmation that it is, indeed, happening. And, as a bonus, we've been told his host on the official visit will be Danny O'Brien, who would likely be Diggs' quarterback in College Park. I'm not sure I could've picked a better host.

National Signing Day 2012: Terps' Haul Pretty Good, Not Quite Great

Photo

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times: the class Maryland just wrapped up (well, almost wrapped up) yesterday really isn't half-bad. In fact, it's a pretty good haul, especially when you consider where they were a little over a month ago: 11th in the ACC by Rivals, well outside the top 50, with only one four-star commitment.

Fast-forward about 45 days or so, and look at everything that's changed. The Terrapins hired Mike Locksley, D.C.-area recruiting guru and one of the catalysts of the class' strong finish; then they picked up commitments from consensus four-star running back Wes Brown, Gatorade Player of the Year for D.C. Albert Reid, and four-star linebacker Abner Logan, who is recruiting for Maryland on Twitter and was called by Tom Lemming "the sleeper of all sleepers"; and to top it off, they became major players for local five-stars like Eddie Goldman, Ronald Darby, and Stefon Diggs, despite having been eliminated for months prior.

And so with Signing Day in the rearview mirror, Maryland's class checks in at 7th in the ACC by Rivals and a top 50 class by 247. That's not a bad turnaround.

Of course, it could've been better. Guys like D.J. Reader and Korren Kirven ended up elsewhere, as did Goldman and Darby; all indications being that Maryland never really had a chance with the latter two. And, of course, there's Dallas Griffiths, who flipped last-second from Maryland to Liberty, of all places. Signing Day itself, if you want to get technical, was a bit of a dud.

But hey, you can't win all of them. Recruiting isn't about one day; it's about 365 days. Keeping perspective, this class has to be considered a victory for Maryland - far from an overwhelming one, not necessarily one you want to brag about ... but a victory nonetheless. Now it's time to build.

National Signing Day 2012: Overviewing Maryland's Commitments, Back Seven Edition

Logan at a Nike Camp. via media.247sports.com

We're closing on National Signing Day, the Egg McMuffin of all football recruiting days. It's a huge event all across the country; for Maryland, we'll be keeping a close eye on guys like D.J. Reader, Korren Kirven, and Stefon Diggs, all of whom are considering Maryland and would provide a huge late boost to the class. But there's already quite a sizable and, in all honesty, not entirely unimpressive base in place for Maryland. Over the past few days, we've be overviewing that base in a series of three posts. Today, the back seven. You can read the skill position players here and the linemen here.

Linebackers

With two transfers (Ryan Donohue and Ben Pooler) and two starters graduating (Alex Wujciak and Adrian Moten), linebacker was expected to be kind of a rough patch for Maryland's defense this past year. Demetrius Hartsfield returned as a starter and Darin Drakeford was expected to play a big role after a monster sophomore year off the bench, but beyond that there was inexperience and a real lack of depth in the linebacking corps.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bradford decided to make one of the linebacker positions a hybrid defensive back spot, known as STAR. This meant Kenny Tate, Maryland's all-world safety, was moved down to a new position, and we all know how that went. With him went Mario Rowson (who actually did very well in that spot), Avery Graham, and Desmond Kearse.

With the hire of Brian Stewart, the Terps look to be headed to a 3-4. This means a different look in the linebacking corps, with four of them on the field at all times (although there have been rumors that may simply drop back one of their defensive linemen to a standing position).

Assuming some of those guys move back to their original spots and with the need for an extra linebacker on the field, Maryland was always going to be in need of a whole host of linebackers in this class. And boy did they get them.
