BEEJAY ANYA

BeeJay Anya

Position: C / PF

HS / Hometown: DeMatha / Hyattsville, MD

AAU: Team Takeover

Measurables: 6-8 / 250

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 96, #2 C, #16 nationally
-Rivals: , #2 C, #29 nationally
-Scout: , #5 C, #13 nationally

Other Schools: Georgetown, Indiana, Kansas, N.C. State, Ohio State, Pitt, Rutgers, St. John's, Texas, UCLA

Notes: Anya made waves in the news when it was revealed that his wingspan is an absurd, perhaps record-breaking 7-9, effectively making him several inches taller than his listed height. He's been a big name on the scene since last year, and there are dozens of suitors for the big man.

Major Strengths: For one, that absurd wingspan, which takes his height and essentially makes him nearly a foot taller when it comes to altering shots or grabbing rebounds. He's also wide and strong, which makes him even bigger in the post, where he can shield the ball using his body. He's getting lighter on his feet and developing post moves, and has already flashed an ability to make good interior passes. He's improved rapidly, too, which indicates a strong work ethic and motor.

Needs Improvement: He's not quick, for one, nor a very good leaper, nor exactly a gazelle running the floor. All that is to be expected with his size, I suppose, but guys like Jordan Williams and perhaps even Shaquille Cleare have shown an ability to overcome that. His game is more physicality than anything else at this point and needs to become more well-rounded. He needs to continue to improve his conditioning and slim down to become leaner and more effective.

Odds: Frankly, pretty poor unless something changes. Maryland was on Anya fast, but that was in the Gary Williams days. Since then, Indiana has pushed hard, and UCLA and Syracuse have been big presences as well. Maryland's on the outside looking in.

RODNEY BULLOCK

Rodney Bullock

Position: PF / SF

HS / Hometown: Kecoughtan / Hampton, VA

AAU: Virginia Assault / DC Assault

Measurables: 6-7 / 200

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 91, #17 SF
-Rivals: , #105 nationally
-Scout: , #29 PF

Other Schools: Miami, N.C. State, Virginia, Virginia Tech

Notes: Bullock is a little under the radar, but has already been on campus under the Turgeon regime and, given that he plays for an Assault affiliate, should have at least a fleeting connection with Dalonte Hill. He's one of the many fringe targets for the 2013 forward spot.

Major Strengths: A combo forward, Bullock plays with tenacity in the paint despite being a little undersized. He's longer than his height, with above-average athleticism as well. He's a good finisher around the net and thanks to his length, athleticism, motor, and above-average hands, a productive rebounder.

Needs Improvement: Bullock is sort-of caught in-between positions right now. He'll need to grow and bulk up to be a legit ACC starter at the 4, but he doesn't possess the game to be a 3. There's plenty of time, though, for him to figure that part of it out.

Odds: It's early and it remains to be seen if A) Maryland will push, B) Bullock will develop, or C) other big schools will get involved. If Maryland eventually pushes, they should be competitive.

JUNIOR ETOU

Junior_20etou_jpg_medium

Position: PF

HS / Hometown: Arlington Country Day (Jacksonville, Fl.) / Rockville, MD

AAU: D.C. Assault

Measurables: 6-7 / 210

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 93, #12 PF, #50 nationally
-Rivals: , #70 nationally
-Scout: , #23 PF, #91 nationally

Other Schools: Cincinnati, Kansas State, West Virginia

Notes: Etou is one of DC Assault's more promising prospects, so it's certain that Dalonte Hill will play a big role in his recruitment. Still new to the game, Etou is rapidly improving and will be a very intriguing prospect when the AAU circuit starts back up.

Major Strengths: Extremely hard worker with a great motor. Very aggressive and physical. Just plain plays tough. Has built his game on rebounding, shot-blocking, and doing the dirty work. Is a bull in the interior. His work ethic means he should be coachable, and his improvement backs that up.

Needs Improvement: Seriously undersized for the way he plays, both in terms of height and weight. His game is also lacking in refinement: he's not someone you give the ball in the post consistently. If he doesn't grow, he might be stuck in a Dino Gregory / Boom Osby area - which is okay, but not really top-50 good.

Odds: Still too early to know if he'll be a priority, but if he gets an offer Maryland should be an early favorite based on the Dalonte Hill connection.

AARON HARRISON

Position: SG

HS / Hometown: Travis / Ft. Bend, TX

AAU: Houston Defenders

Measurables: 6-5 / 210

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 98, #1 SG, #6 nationally
-Rivals: , #2 SG, #7 nationally
-Scout: , #1 SG, #6 nationally

Other Schools: Baylor, Georgetown, Kentucky, Texas, Villanova

Notes: You already know the story, so I'll keep it short: Aaron is the identical twin of Andrew Harrison, both of them top 10 prospects nationally and very good at the game of basketball. Andrew is the shooting guard and perhaps slightly less well-regarded of the twins, but both are stars and could be the centerpiece to any potential Maryland rebirth.

Major Strengths: If I've said it once, I've said it a million times: Andrew is a serious microwave scorer. If he's hot, he can score from nearly anywhere on the court. His best aspect is his deadly three-point shot, but he can hardly be called a specialist, as he's also effective off the dribble, highly athletic, and an above-average finisher at the rim. If he can get into a rhythm, he possesses a perfect scorer skillset. And once he does heat up, he'll score 10 in the blink of an eye.

Needs Improvement: He does tend to drift a bit at times; the games I've seen, his points really come in bunches instead of steadily throughout the course of the game, but that's the case with most scorers. The biggest thing is his attitude: he's been prone to getting technical fouls for complaining to the refs or taunting. Rest easy that there appear to be no team-oriented issues, but it's worth mentioning. He also could use some improvement with his handles, but then you're really starting to nit-pick.

Odds: By all accounts, unless something radical happens, this is a two-man race, with Kentucky's John Calipari playing the Darth Vader role. Villanova and Baylor both have outside chances, but between the Bino Ranson, Baltimore, and Under Armour connections, Maryland is certainly in the thick of it.

ANDREW HARRISON

Position: PG

HS / Hometown: Travis / Ft. Bend, TX

AAU: Team Takeover

Measurables: 6-5 / 210

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 98, #1 PG, #5 nationally
-Rivals: , #1 PG, #1 nationally
-Scout: , #1 PG, #4 nationally

Other Schools: Baylor, Georgetown, Kentucky, Texas, Villanova

Notes: See above. Andrew is traditionally more highly-regarded and a point guard instead of a shooting guard, but other than that Andrew and Aaron are pretty well identical in physical tools. He's the best point guard in the country pretty easily, and some say the best prospect overall.

Major Strengths: Harrison can be occasionally stifled a little. But 95% of the time, the things he does are just so far ahead of anyone else on the floor. The game seems to run in slow motion for him, physically and mentally. He always seems to find an open man, often when you think he's dribbled himself into a cul-de-sac. He's certainly pass-first, but when he needs to score he can. His handles are impressive and he's above-average at getting into the lane, either to dish or finish. He's a high-intensity player who works hard and has a high motor.

Needs Improvement: If anything, he could serve to be a little more selfish. He can get too dialed in to finding shots for others, and if he was more proactive about finding his own shot he'd be a more complete player. He, like his twin, could stand to calm down a little at times.

Odds: See above. A lot of people are skeptical, but unless you're chalking them up to Kentucky right now, Maryland isn't out of it.

KRIS JENKINS

1021927_medium

Position: PF

HS / Hometown: Gonzaga / Washington, D.C.

AAU: D.C. Assault

Measurables: 6-6 / 230

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 94, #10 PF, #41 nationally
-Rivals:
-Scout: , #18 PF, #67 nationally

Other Schools: Miami, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Xavier

Notes: Jenkins might be the most interesting and intriguing prospect in the 2013 class. Seriously: how many 6-6 (generously) power forwards are out there that are pretty easily four star recruits? I mean, yes, Dave Neal. But other than him.

Major Strengths: Jenkins has been insane since the start of 2012. Just out of his mind. He's a great spot-up shooter, with range out to three. He's a very good, productive rebounder. He's wide-bodied and strong, which helps him overcome his lack of size. He's a good passer, tough, and skilled throughout his game, with good touch.

Needs Improvement: Where does he play? He's too short to be a 4 on a really effective team, but not nearly athletic enough to be a 3. I'm not that worried about it, frankly - you have 13 spots, and you don't need everything to be a perfect fit. Draymond Green has worked out fine for Michigan State. Anyway, he does need to slim down and become more athletic, and also need to keep up this absurd productivity.

Odds: Depends: does Maryland push? That's the real question. If they do, well ... he's a D.C. Assault player and doesn't have a ton of huge players on him just yet. It's an issue of timing, partially - if Maryland wants him and pushes quickly enough, they should be as competitive as anyone else.

RYSHEED JORDAN

Rysheed_20jordan150_jpg_medium

Position: PG

HS / Hometown: Vaux Roberts / Phildadelphia

AAU: PTP Elite

Measurables: 6-4 / 185

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 94, #6 PG, #35 nationally
-Rivals: , #5 PG, #25 nationally
-Scout: , #6 PG, #24 nationally

Other Schools: Arizona, Georgetown, N.C. State, Pitt, St. John's, Temple, Villanova

Notes: Exploded at the John Wall's Breakout Camp, where he was in attendance alongside Seth Allen. Maryland expressed interest shortly after; at the time, it looked like he might be a backup plan for the Harrisons. Now? He's a Plan A all of his own.

Major Strengths: Great size for point guard (6-4) allows him to see over smaller defenders. Combined with his natural floor vision, he could be as good a floor general as there is in the entire class, with Aaron Harrison the only exception. Surprisingly good athlete with an explosive first step. Creative. Can play the two if he has to.

Needs Improvement: Sort of caught in-between positions as a combo guard, though he really could play either the 1 or the 2 solely if he dedicated himself to it. Could stand to add some strength to his frame. His high school isn't a prep powerhouse and his AAU team is relatively small-time, which means he hasn't consistently proven himself against the best of the best.

Odds: I'm really not sure if Maryland has a better chance with Jordan than they do the Harrisons; a lot of people would think so just based on the rankings, but Jordan has vastly more suitors and they aren't exactly small-timers. We'll see.

RASHAD MUHAMMAD

204797_medium

Position: SG

HS / Hometown: Bishop Gorman / Las Vegas, NV

AAU: Dream Vision

Measurables: 6-4 / 170

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 85, #65 SG
-Rivals:
-Scout:

Other Schools: Colorado, SMU, Texas A&M, USC, UTEP

Notes: Yep, he's the little brother of Shabazz Muhammad, the top recruit in the 2012 class. Rashad doesn't get quite as much 'pub as his big bro, nor is he ranked as highly, but he does have some impressive early offers and will definitely be a highly-scrutinized player on the trail.

Major Strengths: He has a great sense of the game, much like, say, Terrell Stoglin. He spends most of his time off the ball, picking his spots, and is smart with the ball once he gets it, letting the game flow through him. Truthfully, he could probably play the 1, the 2, or the 3 at the college level, which is some great versatility. He's pretty long, and with a solid three-pointer.

Needs Improvement: He lacks the killer instinct of his brother, and might let the game come to him a bit too much - he could do well to attack a bit more. He also lacks his brother's great athleticism, which limits him a bit as a wing player.

Odds: He seems like a Turgeon-type wing - that is, good basketball IQ and good decision-maker - and has an early offer. The distance factor will likely play a role, though, as will the huge number of other options there are at guard and wing.

RASHAWN POWELL

254267_medium

Position: PG

HS / Hometown: Dr. Phillips / Orlando, Fl.

AAU: Florida Assault

Measurables: 5-11 / 160

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 91, #19 PG
-Rivals: , #136 nationally
-Scout: No profile

Other Schools: Miami, Seton Hall, UCF

Notes: Hey, it's a true point guard. (Well, sorta.) Maryland isn't recruiting many non-combos, but Powell probably falls into that category. Turgeon has supposedly been impressed by him, and will definitely be watching him some more, especially if the Harrisons end up in Lexington. Also: nicknamed Pookie.

Major Strengths: There's some disagreement over how much of a pure point guard Powell is, compared to a scoring point. Either way, he's certainly not a combo, which should be music to your ears. Anyway, he's very explosive, with a lightning-quick first step and great ability to penetrate. He keeps his head up and does a very good job of finding open teammates, especially in transition, where his speed really shines.

Needs Improvement: A bit small and slight, but that shouldn't be a big deal at this level. That said, having never seen him play, I wonder how someone well someone his size will play defense. He could also look to be a bit more consistent as a floor general, as it sounds as if he does look a bit for his own shot a bit more than a true floor general would. Not a big deal, especially with Mark Turgeon coaching him.

Odds: Well, he doesn't have an offer yet to my knowledge, and that's really the first step. It also may depend on the Harrisons. But assuming those two things break his way, well, there are no big dogs on him yet and he seems to be a favorite of Turgeon.

STANFORD ROBINSON

941483_medium

Position: SG

HS / Hometown: Paul VI / Fairfax, Va.

AAU: Team Takeover

Measurables: 6-4 / 185

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 94, #13 SG, #47 nationally
-Rivals: , #96 nationally
-Scout: , #9 SG, #53 nationally

Other Schools: Miami, N.C. State, Pitt, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Xavier

Notes: Robinson has been a big name in the D.C. area for some time now, but just recently started to get legitimate national pub. A slasher with an improving all-around game, Robinson received a Maryland offer in January, with most high-level schools offering around the same time. The Harrison Twins might be Maryland's biggest priority in this class, but Robinson is part of a very strong second wave - and, in fact, I wouldn't be shocked to see them accept a commitment from a guy like Robinson right now.

Major Strengths: At his best he's an attacking, slashing wing. He makes quick moves toward the basket and can finish really well at the rim - think Nick Faust in this regard. He's not very tall for a 2 but is lanky and very athletic. Like many athletic slashers, he plays very good and intense defense. Has been improving rapidly, especially with his jumper. Can be a playmaker if need be.

Needs Improvement: He's a bit of a combo guard and some say he's as small as 6-3, so you'd hope he could grow a bit before he gets to college. Also needs to continue to improve his jumper; as good a slasher as he may be, he won't be able to get by guys at this level without a jumper to keep them honest.

Odds: Maryland hasn't been in with Robinson very long, but they got a relatively early start. With Dalonte Hill on the staff, they should be in the top tier for every D.C. kid they want. Does that mean they'll land him? No, not at all, especially not with so many other guard options on the board. But the Terrapins should definitely be in that upper tier.

KAMERON WILLIAMS

Position: SG/PG

HS / Hometown: Mt. St. Joseph's / Baltimore, Md.

AAU: Nike Baltimore Elite

Measurables: 6-2 / 175

Rankings and Profiles:
-ESPN: , 85, #61 SG
-Rivals:
-Scout: No profile

Other Schools: Dayton, Miami, Richmond, Virginia, VCU

Notes: Kameron Williams might as well be Maryland's replacement for Terrell Stoglin: he's an undersized, crafty 2-guard who can fill it. Often compared to likewise undersized-and-crafty Juan Dixon, Williams favors Maryland but will have to work his way into a committable offer.

Major Strengths: Very smart about how he gets his points. Good outside shooter who can heat up fast, but he's not just a sniper. Ala Stoglin, he has a very quick first step and good body control. Consistently puts up gigantic numbers. He's not extraordinarily athletic but despite his size can get up for dunks. A crafty pure scorer.

Needs Improvement: Undersized for the 2 at just 6-2, but he's certainly not a pure point guard, even less so than Stoglin. He needs to improve defensively, both in intensity and skill level. Also needs to work on his ball-handling and passing offensively. Is a bit one-dimensional right now, but you probably know my opinion: you have 13 scholarship players, and you could do a lot worse than giving one to instant offense.

Odds: Should Maryland offer before he commits elsewhere, Turgeon & Co. have a great chance. Question is, does that happen? I'm not sure, but I'm assuming we'll find out much more once the AAU season starts up.
