Maryland football really needs some secondary help after losing three of four 2015 starters to graduation. That attrition will continue after this upcoming season when Will Likely, the group's only returning starter, exhausts his fourth and final year of eligibility. The recruiting trail is the best place for the Terps to make up for these losses, and four-star Potomac corner Deon Jones would certainly help the team's secondary problems.
He's still taking visits to Florida and Florida State before he "shuts things down," he told Rivals' Adam Friedman, but Maryland looks to be in a very good place to land him.
Jones talks about several teams in Friedman's article, but the real meat of the thing is here:
Watch for Jones to announce a commitment before the upcoming season. Maryland is the likely destination at this point but Clemson and Florida are lurking and could make a move if Jones takes visits there and really likes how they went. While his visits to Pittsburgh and Ohio State went well, it doesn't sound like they be big factors when it comes time for Jones to announce his commitment.
Jones, the No. 13 corner in the class of 2017 and the No. 3 player in Maryland according to the 247Sports Composite, is rated higher as a recruit than any of Maryland's current defensive backs were. Jones would be the team's second-highest rated recruit in the class behind Joshua Kaindoh, and could see playing time right away.
