I spent Sunday at Centreville High School in Clifton, Va. taking in Nike's The Opening regional recruiting camp for Washington, D.C. "The Opening" is an annual camp for the country's best football recruits, held during the summer months in Oregon and sponsored by the apparel company. There's a whole series of regional camps leading up to The Opening, and the best players from those camps get invitations to the national shindig in Oregon.
So it was on Sunday, with a few dozen Maryland football recruits, including four verbal commits, taking the field in Virginia. The hope is to raise their national profile a bit and get better through competition, even though it's all just drills.
Maryland four-star commit Kasim Hill was named the day's top quarterback by Nike staff. He looked excellent, showing some athleticism and throwing a hard, mostly accurate football. Here's video:
Here's an interview with Hill.
Three-star cornerback Fofie Bazzie looked strong in man-to-man coverage during the one drill I saw him perform. Four-star offensive tackle Jordan McNair had a much harder time, especially against elite DeMatha defensive end Chase Young. (Young was the best player on the field. He's as big-time as it gets.)

Three-star tight end Andrew Park had shoulder surgery in January. He's healthy now, he said, but didn't want to risk falling on the recently repaired shoulder, so he didn't participate. He was there to support friends, though.
Uncommitted four-star running back Anthony McFarland, considered by many to be the top 2017 player in Maryland, worked mostly at receiver. He looks like he could play either in the slot or the backfield.
McFarland, Young and four-star athlete Joshua Paschal (all pictured above) earned Oregon invites.
Here's some reading material from the weekend.
Over at SBNation.com, we've done quite a bit of work on the NCAA's satellite camps ban, which prevents coaches from one FBS program from either holding camps off campus or showing up another's for a different camp.
