The Maryland football program has gotten off to a fast recruiting start for 2017, with the Terrapins in strong position to sign the best class in school history.
If either of two new developments leads to something bigger, they’ll be in an even better spot. Let’s go through them!
Four-star New Jersey athlete Markquese Bell has Maryland in what’s apparently a top 13, although he hasn’t closed up shop to other schools. There’s some stiff competition here, obviously in the form of some national heavyweights, but also from Rutgers, which has made the in-state product a high priority.

Also, Maryland’s in the top 11 for Virginia safety/running back/athletic freak-who-can-play-wherever-he-wants Devon Hunter.

Maryland is the least historically successful of any program still in it for Hunter, but it’s good news for the Terps that they’re still in the conversation. Hunter might wind up being classified as a five-star prospect by the time his senior year is over. Evaluators absolutely love him, and he could have a big year.
We interviewed Hunter a few months ago.
Maryland's also in the top four for local running back Tayon Fleet-Davis.

In other realms
Profiles in Terpage roll on with freshman linebacker Antoine Brooks. Also, a few depth receivers, Zac Morton and Michael Cornwell.
Looking ahead, Maryland should start Big Ten play with a win, because Purdue is bad.
Potential explanations on Robert Carter Jr.’s slide in the NBA Draft.
Stay tuned:

He’s really good, folks.
(Programming note, along these lines: SB Nation’s Bud Elliott and I are covering Nike’s The Opening football camp in Oregon next month, so I’ll have a lot of Maryland-centric notes and videos to pass along.)
And, hey, it’s really cool that Billy Hurley III won Tiger Woods’ tournament at Congressional this weekend. Hurley is a serviceman who’s gone through a lot of personal and professional struggle in the last year, and now he wins a pretty big event in his hometown — not far from College Park, either. That’s great.
