One-and-Dones - Pro or Con

With the recent news that Trevon Duval is no longer considering Maryland, this seems like a good time to open this debate: Should Maryland continue to expend a great deal of time, effort and money in recruiting one-and-dones?

Duval is the first example. As a freshman, Anthony Cowan has already proven to be more than serviceable at point guard. Against Georgetown, he calmly sank a pair of critical free throws with 18 seconds left - despite being iced by the officials, no less - to keep the Terps' comeback hopes alive. Furthermore, against a quality, team - and a full-court pressure defense - he committed just two turnovers against five assists. After that performance, his role on this team is pretty well etched in stone for the next four years.

Adding Duval might have thrown doubts into Cowan's mind about his role on the team moving forward. He might legitimately wonder if Turge will continue to recruit over him. And how would that affect his play? Entering the season, I was cautiously hopeful that Cowan could be the heir apparent to the Melo Trimble era; and after two games, I have no concerns. Adding a one-and-done at PG isn't worth the risk of negatively impacting Cowan's level of play. If depth is the concern, adding a grad-transfer would make more sense in this situation.

Diamond Stone was a completely different scenario, in my opinion. No disrespect to Damonte Dodd or Michal Cekovsky, but neither managed to prove they could become the heir apparent to Alex Len. So, adding Stone served to give them an additional year to improve their game to hold down the center position on their own this season.

In summary, landing a one-and-done is fine in the right situation: If adding a one-and-done comes with the risk of damaging your long-term future, then it's not worth it, IMO. But feel free to chime in, and be sure to vote in the attached poll.
