High School Highlights:
How'd He Get to College Park?
Taivon Jacobs hails from Camp Springs, Maryland and is the younger brother of current Terps wide receiver Levern Jacobs. The younger Jacobs, at Suitland High School, was a first team All-Met selection by the Washington Post his junior and senior year and as a senior was picked to be a member of the 2012 Maryland Big School All-State Team. He also was quite the track and field athlete because he became a member of the United States Junior Olympic Track and Field Team and also earned first team All-Met honor by The Washington Post.
Jacobs was in the 2013 recruiting class and he originally committed to Ohio State, his dream school but as the Baltimore Sun's Jakob Engelke wrote, Jacobs changed his mind two weeks before National Signing Day in 2013:
". . . As the weeks and months went on, I got into reality and talked it over with my family. It’s been some rough days and rough nights these past few weeks. At the end of the day, I made my decision."
"I was up until like 3 a.m. just thinking what to do. I had to think about everything, not just myself. This is going to be my life the next four years. I want to be happy where I’m at. I feel as though this is the best place for me to be with my family here."
Jacobs switched his commitment from Ohio State to stay home and play at Maryland. Jacobs redshirted his freshman season (2013) and was named scout team player of the week for his efforts in preparing for a game against Clemson in late October. In 2014, he got his first career start as a redshirt freshman against James Madison but suffered a right meniscus injury in that game which ended his season.
Career Highlight:
Scout team player of the week against Clemson.
Dream Season:
He becomes the go to guy for either Daxx Garman or Caleb Rowe and has a break out year statistically: 80+ catches, 800+ yards and 10+ touchdowns. Are those numbers realistic? Maybe not but he can still contribute at a high level if used effectively.
2015 Prospectus:
If his speed hasn't dropped a step due to his meniscus injury, it will be interesting to see if he is utilized more in bubble screens and quick slant situations. Special teams could be another good option for him as well, but Jacobs should have a starting spot at wide receiver as long as he stays healthy.
