It feels so much better when I think I have a handle on the basketball recruiting plans. I mean, there are only five positions, plus a handful of nuances for a few of the positions (a stretch-four vs. a conventional PF, a shoot-first PG vs. a distributor, etc).
But with the revolving door - in and out - that has become the UMD basketball roster, I'm thoroughly perplexed. Do we want to add Robert Carter, Terry Henderson, or Andrew White, none of whom would be eligible until 2015, but would take up a scholarship spot this season as well? How will the addition of either of those affect the 2015 recruiting class (and beyond) in terms of the size of the class and our positions of need?
Assuming we don't add a transfer this season, we'll have six scholarships open entering the 2015-2016 season, with one PG, one SG, two SFs, and three bigs; so there are several positions of need (in theory, we could easily add one player at each position, and still be short on guards).
To aid in the discussion, here is the expected 2015-2016 basketball roster as it stands this nanosecond:
1) Melo Trimble (So) PG
2) Dion Wiley (So) SG
3) Jared Nickens (So) SF
4) Trayvon Reed (So) C
5) Mikael Cekovsky (So) C/PF
6) Damonte Dodd (Jr) C
7) Jake Layman (Sr) SF
Is it any wonder recruits wait to commit?
