What separates college sports from the professionals? A lot of people would initially answer the school pride that each game has, which creates an intensity that cannot be matched at the professional levels. Each school has its own unique atmosphere and set of traditions that sets it apart from every other school in the country. One of the groups of people that makes this possible is the band.
Try to imagine a college football game without a marching band, or a basketball game without the pep band. It's hard to picture a Maryland Football game without the marching band trucking through the tunnel. They stay for the entire game, and play their hearts out for the University of Maryland, rain or shine, winning or losing. Few groups can claim they have that same level of loyalty. There are several things that are needed to help keep the Mighty Sound of Maryland the "Best Band in the Land." One of those things is the van that the band uses to help transport equipment around the campus. The current van, which was purchased in 2006, is...less than favorable. There are several things that are wrong with it, and it is need of constant repair. Also, as we move into the B1G, one thing that will have to grow to accommodate it is the Mighty Sound of Maryland. Every B1G school has a huge band, and our own band is growing to match those numbers. However, one of the negatives that has come from this is that MSOM has outgrown the current, and already broken down, van.
The band needs a new van if it wants to stay competitive with the rest of the Big Ten and provide the fans of Maryland with the best experience it can. I am coming to you as a student and a fan of the great University of Maryland, as well as a brother of Maryland's chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity, to ask for your help. I wish I could provide all the money to buy this van, but I can't. I'm just a broke college student. There is a kickstarter, which is linked below, to give us the $25,000 needed for a new van that is big enough to help equip our band. As I write this post, we are at $17,966, with 16 days to go on the fund. Coaches Brenda Frese and Randy Edsall both know the important of the band to the University of Maryland, and have respectively donated $500 and $3,000 to the fund. Please help show that the fan base is as firmly behind the band as the coaches, and help us reach our goal. Every dollar is appreciated, and puts us one step closer to showing the B1G that we truly have the Best Band in the Land.
