I don't think I've seen this anywhere else on the site, so if this is mentioned elsewhere I apologize. Today, the US Men's National Team released their preliminary rosters for this year's World Cup in 2014. Out of the 30 players named on the roster, FOUR of them are former Terps. Guys, this is a big deal. No other college program has more. The four players are:
Maurice Edu (Midfielder): He was with the Terps for 3 years between 2004-2006 and won a National Championship in 2005. He currently plays for the Philadelphia Union (on loan from Stoke City in the EPL).
Omar Gonzalez (Defender): Played for MD between 2006-2008 and won a National Championship in 2008. Currently plays for the LA Galaxy.
Clarence Goodson (Defender): Was at MD between 2000-2003 (Red Shirt in 2000) and plays for the San Jose Earthquakes.
Graham Zusi (Midfielder): If you followed MD soccer over the years, this name should sound familiar to you. Graham was a Terp between 2005 and 2008 and won two college cup titles. Zusi scored the winning goals in both the Semis and Finals in 2008.
You can see both of those goals (along with a Gonzalez goal) here: Top Ten Goals from 2008
While we've been through our share of some bad news recently, I think we should be really proud of the program that Sasho has built here. MD has 13 College Cup Appearances (Soccer's Version of the Final Four), Has Won the College Cup three times and also finished runner's up three times. We won the ACC tournament six times, all of which came since '96. We also won the regular season title 22 times.
Here's a link from MD's site regarding the announcement of the four players. There is a nice quote from Sasho there as well. Four Terps Land on Preliminary US World Cup Roster
