I was surprised when Turge went gung-ho in his recruitment of Jared Nickens. Not that Nickens isn't worth the scholarship; he's fully capable of becoming a star at UMD. But as a small forward (6'6", 180), he doesn't play a position of need with Dez, Nick and Jake already there.
By all account, Jared is a great shooter from deep, with great form and elevation on his shot. As for shooters, we'll also have Melo, Dion, Jake, Seth and Smo next year. Furthermore, there are several excellent shooters who would be available in the 2015 class.
Nickens' commitment, and the addition of Trayvon Reed as a rim-protector (and a project on the offensive end), means that an area of need will likely remain unaddressed for another season: An athletic power forward.
I've watched Obi Enecioniya play twice this season. For those new to TT, Obi was a Maryland target for a year or more until around the time Nickens committed, and the impression was that Turge broke off his recruitment. He has since committed to Temple. At 6'9", 215 (give or take a few pounds), and decent hops, Obi was the type of player this team has been missing. He's solid on the defensive end (albeit against mediocre competition), and is able to protect the rim; but more importantly, he has a smooth, consistent stroke from 15-feet, doesn't mind taking it aggressively to the rim, and runs the floor well. Would he have been able to contribute from day one? I think he would, primarily because we have no one else with those skillsets.
I'm not going to go so far as to say Obi would have been "the answer". I am, however - and have been since we secured Nickens' commitment - puzzled as to why we pushed so hard for someone who plays a position at which we have some depth, while abandoning a position of need.
Am I the only one who was puzzled by Turge going all-out to get Nickens? Does anyone else feel like we would have been better off holding out for an athletic power forward in 2014 (if possible)? I understand there's a connection between Nickens and Papagiannis (having two seven footers would be a huge shot in the arm), but is it worth it to leave a gaping hole in the lineup by not getting an athletic PF?
