Everyone makes a big deal about Maryland's athletic department's finances being in bad shape. And they are, this is not a post in an attempt to the an apologist. But it is interesting the role expectations play in this conversation. At Maryland, and most elite (meaning top 50) athletic programs, the University expects athletics to be self sustaining. Much noise has been made that Maryland has not been recently.
The only reason I'm posting this here is because it relates to our move into the B1G. Today I learned that Rutgers is nowhere near self sustaining. At Rutgers there appears to be an expectation that the university will subsidize athletics - which leads to much less outcry and criticism. Think Maryland's $21m deficit (without ACC money) is bad? In 2012-2013 Rutgers subsidized $47 million. Which was an enormous increase over the previous years $27.9 million.
I want, and expect, Maryland to get back to being self-sustaining, but at least we aren't in as bad of shape as Rutgers.
