Gage Shaffer falls short; Frankfort gets dominated by Bridgeport in WV AA Title game

As expected, defending WV AA football champion Bridgeport High School dominated Frankfort 43-7 Friday night. Future Terp Gage Shaffer played QB for Frankfort for the last time. He had a rough night going 8-20 96 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception (the touchdown itself was a 56 yard deflection off a Bridgeport defender that actually hit the ground but was counted as a catch. It was not reviewable).

It wasn't all on him, he did over throw and under throw a bunch of balls but Bridgeports defense didn't allow more than 14 points all year and only allowed an average of just over 7 points a game. He also had a good defensive game with several tackles and an interception. He is Frankfort's punter but had several short and shanked punts.

Bridgeport was lead by WVU linebacker Wes Tonkery's younger brother Dylan Tonkery who had 312 yards rushing (a new state championship game record) and 3 touchdowns.

Shaffer has a nice quick release and was hard to take down at times. He needs to put on some weight as he is a beanpole but should have opportunity to grow and play with a lot more talent around him. Unfortunately he will also face a much higher level of competition as most of the schools in AA WV have 600 or less students. It should also be pointed out that Bridgeport has been AA for the past 3 years and spent the previous 10 years in AAA.
