NYT map shows college football loyalties nationwide.

NY Times article

A recent article in the New York Times maps out college football loyalties across the country using, of all things, Facebook "likes". Say what you want about the methodology but it's a fascinating view of how football loyalties sometimes adhere to state lines and sometimes not. For example, Minnesota, whose football team has underperformed historically (at least until this season) is largely invaded by Wisconsin, The Northwest and a lot of northern California down to the Bay area is owned by Oregon. Of local interest, UMD seems firmly in control of the state of Maryland with the exception of Western Maryland which goes for WVU. There's an interactive map in which you can highlight individual Zip codes and see the breakdown. Throughout much of Maryland the support for the Terps is in the 45-55% range with Penn State and Ohio State the runners-up, mostly in single digits. Of interest, UVA can barely hold on to the immediate surroundings of Charlottesville. It looks like Vatican City with VAT owning most of the rest of the state.
