Maryland football news: Keenan McCardell hired as wide receivers coach

USA TODAY Sports

The former NFL player and coach will be headed to the Terrapins.

Maryland has filled one of their vacant position coach openings, as the Terps have hired Keenan McCardell as their wide receivers coach, the school announced in a release.

McCardell replaces Lee Hull, who left to take the head coaching job at Morgan State. From Houston, he was a star receiver at UNLV, but was picked in the 12th round by Washington in the NFL Draft. After one season there, he spent four years with the Browns before really making his name with the Jaguars, with four 1,000 yard seasons in six years. He had brief success with the Buccaneers and Chargers towards the end of his career, and retired in 2007.

His connection to the program is clear -- Randy Edsall was the defensive backs coach with Jacksonville from 1994-97.

McCardell returned to Washington in 2010 as the wide receivers coach, after spending a brief time helping the Giants out. He was fired in January 2012, and has not been employed since.

It's an interesting move, as the wide receivers coach position was thought to be one where Maryland would take a recruiting approach. McCardell's recruiting acumen is entirely unknown, but having a two-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl Champion on your staff can't be a bad thing.

Update: Looks like he's going on the trail right away.
