Unless we see a turnaround of epic proportions this year is pretty much a lost cause. I am not one to jump on the "Fire the Coach" bandwagon 2.5 years in but what I will do is outline what needs to change to stop me from jumping on that bandwagon after year 4.
1. Player/Team Improvement – Forget injuries and forget talent. Any good coach is able to get the most out of what they are working with and have the team and its players show improvement over the course of the season. I have yet to see this at all. No team has significantly improved from beginning to end of the season and I can’t say that any players have significantly improved as well.
2. Recruiting – It has been said Turg is doing a good job recruiting. That may be true and it’s obvious some of the TOP local talent is actually considering MD again. BUT the end results would prove otherwise. Shaq is the biggest disappointment out of anyone. Chuck is limited. Seth can’t stay healthy. Jake has proven to struggle against anyone who is just as athletic as he. Dodd is considered a reach recruit by many top tier D-1 programs. Roddy shows promise but he can’t shoot (I’ll give freshman a little break). All of this begs the question; is Turg actually a good recruiter? Is he getting top or even good talent? I think these are fair questions at this point in Turg’s tenure based on what I see out there.
3. Coaching – We barely see any resemblance of an offense. We consistently see confusion. We occasionally see motivated players and often see poor body language/attitude. We always see TURNOVERS and bonehead mistakes. We see no accountability from players. We also have seen poor situational coaching like, lack of effective time-outs, not putting a man on the in-bounder or not using the press when we should. I am not sure how else I can say this but Turg looks to be ineffective and overwhelmed as a coach.
As you can see I have pretty much stated that Turg needs to improve in ALL the major areas a coach is responsible for. Believe me, it is painful to even write. As I have stated before, I am not one to advocate firing a coach 2.5 years in but if we are going to be truthful a lot needs to be improved.
Do you agree or disagree? Am I missing something here?
