This is an interesting piece on student-athletes at public universities that excel on the field/court but are functionally illiterate and have absolutely no business being in a top-tier university. For as much as the ACC (and yes, the Big Ten) crow about superior academics, the "front porch" of our universities are seemingly populated by those that represent the antithesis of what the highest levels of academia are all about: Intelligence, curiosity, and excellence in education. On top of that, these students are not even able to take advantage of the benefit of the free education they are being provided with. It's a shame and I hope UMD is on the right side of this one. Given enough heat, I wouldn't be surprised to see the NCAA start cracking down on eligibility.
