Jeremiah Johnson injury update: Maryland starting CB out against Old Dominion

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

One of Maryland's starting cornerbacks will be out in their game against pass-happy Old Dominion.

Maryland starting cornerback Jeremiah Johnson will not play in Saturday's game against Old Dominion after an injury suffered in the team's opener against FIU.

A redshirt junior, Johnson started all 12 games at cornerback in 2012, leading the team with eight passes broken up. Johnson starts at corner with Dexter McDougle, and the two had much success against the Golden Panthers, helping hold quarterback Jake Medlock to a line of 5/15 for 26 yards.

In 2012, Johnson also recorded 43 tackles, with five for a loss and one-and-a-half sacks. Against FIU, he recorded two tackles with one for a loss before the injury.

Maryland will have to figure out a way to deal with Old Dominion's vaunted passing attack without Johnson, and senior Isaac Goins is expected to take Johnson's place in the rotation. Goins had two tackles against FIU, and recorded 11 with with three passes broken up last year.

Look for Maryland to play with four corners for much of the game against the Monarchs' spread attack, which means you will see McDougle, Goins, Will Likely and Alvin Hill, back from injury. It is also a strong possibility that true freshman Jarrett Ross makes his debut in the game.
