I'm sticking in this little Fanpost about tonight's men's soccer 0-2 exhibition loss to the St. John's Red Storm because I was there in my capacity as the representative of Testudo Times and because I thought some folks might be interested in it. So, for those of you who are, here it is:
Now, in my mind, there's only one kind of loss that's a "good" loss and that's the kind that happened to Maryland tonight. It's a "good" loss because it will give Coach Cirovski and his staff plenty to work on before Friday's opener at Stanford and it's good because it's an exhibition and it doesn't count.
Maryland certainly didn't play like the number two team in the nation tonight. St John's was better organized, more intense, more aggressive, and quicker to the ball. I thought the Terps were fortunate to come out of the first half tied at 0-0.
The Terrapins lackluster play continued into the second half and the Red Storm broke through on a free kick from just outside the box somewhere around the 65th minute. Maryland did pick things up a bit and created some good scoring chances but failed to capitalize and a late one timer that put the visitors up 2-0 essentially sealed the game.
The Terps open the season on the west coast with games at Stanford and Cal before returning to College Park for thie home opener against Duke on Friday, September 6.
