How'd he get to College Park?

Kilgo is a perfect example of why coaches more often than not are better at evaluating talent than the major recruiting sites. While he was a 3 star by Rivals and Scout and 2 star by ESPN, he still received offers from major schools such as Auburn, Michigan State, South Carolina and Tennessee, among others.

As Pete noted in his PinT on Kilgo from last season, Kilgo was recruited to Maryland by Lee Hull, one of the few assistant coaches retained by the new staff, and also played offensive guard in high school (as well as basketball and track). In high school, he was named all-conference and all-county.

Kilgo redshirted in 2010, and was named scout team defensive player of the week once. Last season, he played in all 12 games after just playing in five his sophomore season. He's expected to start at NT this season for Maryland.

Nickname:

Darius "Ghostface" Kilgo

Career Highlight:

Aside from his UMTerps profile lists him as a "bulky defensive tackle who attacks blockers," it would be his two sacks last season.

Career Lowlight:

Nate Clarke switching to nose tackle.

Dream Season:

Kilgo anchors a defensive line that is seeing a lot of changes with the loss of A.J. Francis and Joe Vellano, winning All-ACC honors at NT while recording 7 sacks.

Nightmare Season:

A very young defense and inexperienced D-line prevent Kilgo from getting to the QB and his stats suffer as a result.

2013 Prospectus:

Darius Kilgo was the back-up at nose tackle to A.J. Francis last season, but the injury to Andre Monroe shifted Francis out of the NT to the strongside end. That allowed Kilgo to step into the starting NT spot as a redshirt sophomore, where he demonstrated that he could be an anchor at that position for the next two seasons.

Kilgo's biggest assignment this season will likely be anchoring a defensive line that lost two solid players in Vellano and Francis. Kilgo needs to first and foremost occupy space on the line and once the line is solidified, he can hopefully continue to improve his footwork and more frequently get after the quarterback this season.
