Soccer Duo Keys Men's National Team

Two former men's soccer stars, Graham Zusi and Omar Gonzalez, played key roles in propelling the national team to two important victories in the past week.

The men's national team beat Germany, 4-3, in a friendly match in DC and also defeated Jamaica, 2-1, Friday night in Kingston.

Zusi, who played on two national championship teams at Maryland in 2005 and 2008, assisted on goals by Jozy Altidore in the friendly against Germany this past Sunday and again set up Altidore on a header for a goal against Jamaica in a World Cup qualifer Friday night.

Gonzalez, defensive stalwart on the national championship team in 2008, did a nice job of controlling vertical space on the backside.

It's still not sure if either player has won a permanent job on the men's World Cup squad, but it's nice to see them play prominent roles. Maryland remains a top feeder of talent for men's soccer at the national and world stage.
