Maryland Receives Fourth 2014 Commitment

An unheralded lineman from Pennsylvania commits to the Terps.

Frankenshaw is coming to town. 6'6", 276 pound Pennsylvanian defensive lineman David Shaw committed to Maryland today, giving the Terps their fourth commitment of the 2014 class and their first from Pennsylvania.

From Spring Grove, Pennsylvania (and Spring Grove Area Senior High School), Shaw is a relatively unheralded recruit. Maryland was his only scholarship offer (although he received interest from Pitt, UConn and Penn State, visiting the latter in April), and he is unrated on every recruiting agency (here is 24/7's profile, if you'd like to take a gander).

Shaw started playing football at the age of nine, but because of his size he was forced to play in the 10-13 year-old league, before soon graduating to the 14-15 age group. He comes from a football family - his father, James, played at Colgate, and brothers John and Jim were both linemen at soon-to-be in-conference rival Penn State.

His high school head coach, Russ Stoner, played at Towson with Mike Locksley, so there's some obvious in-program connections going on there.

Last season, Shaw was an All-YAIAA player, with 54 tackles as a defensive lineman. He figures to eventually slot into the program as a nose tackle, as his considerable size is his best attribute.
