As the men's basketball teams misses out on another wanted player, does anyone really understand recruiting. I for one am getting pretty confused these days with the ups and downs of college basketball recruiting.
I will start with what I do understand. The first is a team that is winning on a constant basis and making NCAA tourney trips are the more likely candidates to land top tier talent. The second most important is who is the coaching staff and what is their perceived treatment of players in the opinions of handlers/AAU or HS coaches. I would also incorporate program prestige into the equation, but not as much as it use to be. Sure your Dukes, Kentuckys and Kansas of the world can land players just because they are who they are.
The gray area that the NCAA has done a piss poor job of cleaning up is the cheating/illegal recruiting methods of many programs. Granted its hard to track every move, but when programs get caught the slap on the wrist is worth the risk since who knows how many violations and cheating go unseen. I don't understand why college presidents are not fighting harder for equality in punishment and the NCAA implementing specific and predetermined penalties that are steep enough to prove a point, but still reasonable to avoid another SMU.
I for one am coming to a peace with recruiting that recruits today do not look back further then the 90's to determine prestige when it comes to a program and the large majority only look at what has happened in the past 5 or so years. If you add up all the topics mentioned above you can better understand how the Baylors of the world can become a power house recruiting program and Maryland can fall off the top 25 programs.
As for Maryland the only advice I have is patiences, which is one of the hardest things for me to do, but that's all we have. Maryland is not what it was 10 years ago and honestly the only thing I think of right now when a person mentions the Terps is missing the NCAA 4 out of the past 5 years and not sniffing the Top 25. If I'm thinking it you know recruits think the same thing. I do believe in Turge and Co. but we need to give him time. I know this is a broken record, but he was left with nothing and had to rebuild in a very tough situation. I think its about time for Terps fans to realize we need to be successful now to become appealing to the recruit of today!
