How'd He Get to College Park?

Goins started out as a wide receiver and defensive back at El Cerrito, earning first team all-league honors in 2009 at both positions and first team All-East Bay honors as a wide out after his senior campaign. He then ended up at Contra Costa College, where he was named first team all-conference and first team academic all-conference in his final season. As a freshman, he started every game, putting together 36 tackles with four interceptions and eight pass breakups, and followed that up with a six-interception sophomore season before heading to Maryland. Goins was offered by Idaho, New Mexico, and San Jose State, and received interest from Arizona State, Arkansas and Houston, among others.

Goins was recruited by wide receivers coach Lee Hull, and enrolled early last spring. He played in nine games, recording eleven tackles and breaking up three passes, and enters this season as the favorite at nickel back.

Nickname:

"Goins 1"

Career Highlight:

Three tackles against Virginia.

Dream Season:

Goins picks off at least two passes while retaining the nickel role.

2013 Prospectus:

Maryland is top-heavy at corner, to say the least. Dexter McDougle and Jeremiah Johnson inspire confidence as the two starters, but beyond that there's a significant lack of trustworthy names. Goins is a solid player - he did very well for himself in JuCo, and had a solid time of it in limited playing opportunities last season, but that's a pretty significant drop off from your second to third corner. Beyond that, you've got Alvin Hill, a true sophomore with not much playing experience, a walk-on in Tony Perry, and a bunch of true freshmen. Basically, it's the opposite of the safety spots - the starters are cemented at corner, but everyone else is a question mark.

That's not to say Goins shouldn't contribute this year - heck, the job is basically his, and he showed last year that he's capable of playing ACC ball. He's a senior, has plenty of experience, and possesses some of the best ball awareness on the team. Against bigger passing sets, it will likely be him that's the first player off the bench - but there's another intriguing possiblity, whom we will cover tomorrow.
