Just Not Enough Rain: Softball and Baseball Fall

The Florida State Seminoles, who found their hitting stroke in a big way in the second game of Saturday’s double header with Maryland picked up right where they left off scoring three runs off Freshman Maddie Martin in the top of the first Sunday. The Terps bounced back with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Amanda McCann led off for Maryland reaching base on a throwing error by FSU’s catcher after she had apparently struck out. Sara Acosta and Lindsey Schmeiser followed with back to back singles to right and left respectively, loading the bases. McCann scored on Candice Beards’s ground out to short. After catcher Shannon Bustillos popped out to the catcher, left fielder Nikki Maier drove a single to center knocking in two to tie the score. The Terps kept up the pressure when Melissa Mancuso singled and both runners moved up on a passed ball but Corey Schwarz struck out as Maryland stranded two. The Seminoles bounced back in the second scoring an unearned run to recapture the lead but they, too left runners on second and third. It was about this time that it began to drizzle. Unfortunately for the Terrapins, the came neither fast enough nor hard enough to dampen the Florida State attack. The visitors scored seven times in the third as Martin, trying to be too fine with her pitches, walked five in the inning and the Seminoles quickly took advantage. FSU added single runs in the fourth and fifth to open a lead of 13-3 before the Terps made a move to come back in the bottom of the fifth. Maryland put up five runs highlighted by Acosta’s RBI double, Schmeiser’s RBI single, and a three run blast off the bat of Nikki Maier. The home run is Maier’s team leading eighth of the season. Each team scored in the sixth with Schmeiser picking up her second run batted in of the game on a double to left. For the Terps it was a case of too little, too late as they dropped a 14-9 decision and fell to 4-2 in league play and 17-18 overall. The Terps get a mid-week break from ACC play as the host Coppin State in a double header on Wednesday before heading to Raleigh for a three game set at NC State.

Speaking of NC State, the baseball team could have used some rain today, too as the Terps dropped another series in ACC play falling on the road to the Wolfpack by a final of 9-4. For the first time in the series, Maryland broke out on top scoring in the top of the first without benefit of a hit. Center fielder Charlie White led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Lamonte Wade followed with a walk and both runners advanced on Kyle Convissar’s sacrifice bunt. White scored on a Tim Kiene sac fly. NC State roared back putting up four in the home half of the inning. The Terps added another singleton in the top of the second when Blake Schmit scored on Matt Bosse’s single to right. The Pack promptly put up another crooked number with three in the bottom of the second taking a 7-2 lead. They extended the lead to 9-2 adding two in the fourth. Maryalnd scored single runs in the fifth and sixth with one coming on Schmit’s second home run of the year. The homer is only the fourth for the Terrapins as a team. The Terps threatened in the seventh putting runners on second and third with none out and loading the bases with one out but they stranded all three runners and didn’t seriously threaten again. Like the softball team the Terps head home for a single Wednesday afternoon game against Rider before heading back to North Carolina to take on the top ranked 22-1 UNC Tar Heels.

But hey, at least Duke got bumped from the Tournament by Louisville so the day wasn’t a total loss.
