Profiles In Terpage - A Countdown to the Football Season: Greg Parcher

Testudo Times's yearly football preview series continues with the Terps' starting long snapper.

A recurring series where we will profile every player on Maryland's roster, counting down to kick-off against Florida International on August 31. Thanks to OBNUG for the idea.

After a good start yesterday, we continue the series with Maryland's starting long snapper.

High School Highlights:

How'd He Get to College Park?

Parcher played long snapper and defensive back at Spalding, helping the Cavaliers to a 5-5 finish during his senior campaign in 2008. He had the fastest average time at Chris Rubio's 7th Annual National Kicking/Long Snapping event, averaging .70 seconds per snap, but was ranked as the tenth best long snapper there (you have to think the only possible explanation was accuracy problems). Parcher redshirted in 2009 and then spent two years as the backup to Tim Downs. When Downs graduated after the 2011 season, Parcher took over as the starting long snapper, having a largely unnoticeable year (the best kind for a long snapper) and pretty much locking down the job for this season.

Nickname:

Greg "Psterling" Parcher.

Dream Season:

This is the last time we mention his name.

2013 Prospectus:

For the astute readers out there - yes, Maryland's starting and back-up long snappers share the same uniform number. While that is unlikely to be a problem for the team (doubting that they'll be on the field for the same time), it will be nearly impossible for us to tell who is playing - while their frames are markedly different, they'll be hunched over so much it won't really matter.

ANYWAY, it most likely won't become an issue anyway - Parcher has the job on lock, he did a fine job last year, and this is his final season with the program. Maryland has had some serious special teams problems over the past few years and kicker and punter are pretty big question marks at this point (more on that in the coming days!), and a good season from Parcher will go a long way towards a good kicking season, which will go a long way towards a good Maryland season. Basically, Parcher, you're our only hope.

Up Next:

Our next player went to the same high school as an actor on a big network comedy whose show has had a lacking new season.

proudterp got the first one right, but RedTurtle gets a bonus point for creativity.

Standings:

proudterp - 1

Redturtle - 1
