Top 75 MBB National Champ Teams-#32

Stay connected for news and updates

ESPN did a ranking of the National Champion Teams for the First 75 Years of MBB 2002 was #32
32. Maryland, 2002 Maryland wanted to get back to the Final Four after a surprising run in 2001. The backcourt of Juan Dixon and Steve Blake wasn't the most talented in the country (although both were pros), yet it persevered. The Terps fed off one another quite well and had the right balance inside. The final against Indiana was a bit anticlimactic, but not for Gary Williams. The national title culminated quite a run for the coach, as he took his alma mater from an NCAA investigation to subsequent penalties to the top of the sport. This team had winners. That's what I remember most about this squad. It defended and didn't quit or take possessions off. -- Andy Katz #21 was the #$#@@#%% 2001 Team from Puke
They lost four games in 2000-01, lost Carlos Boozer for a stretch and trailed by as many as 22 to Maryland in the national semifinals. Yet they rallied in each instance, most stunningly in that game against the Terrapins, the biggest comeback in Final Four history http://espn.go.com/ncb/feature/video/_/page/Top75champions/ncaa-75-college-basketball
