Since we're headed into the home stretch, and it appears that making it into the NCAA Tournament will require at least some work in Greensboro, I thought it'd be worth taking a look at the ACC Standings and what the seedings are today and where the Terps could end up. If the ACC Tournament began today here would be the seedings.
Top Four Byes
1. Miami
2. Duke
3. UNC (I believe UNC has the tiebreak as of now over UVA)
4. UVA
The Thursday matchups would be
5. NC State vs. 12. VA Tech
6. Maryland vs. 11. GT (GT and BC seeding could be determined the last game of the season as they play each other for the first time)
7. FSU vs. 10. BC
8. Clemson vs. 9.Wake
The first two seeds are essentially locks at this point. Miami being a lock, and Duke being close to a lock. We currently sit one game behind NC State for the 5th spot, and two games behind UVA and UNC for the 4th. We are one game up on FSU, but they hold the tiebreaker due to the sweep. (sigh) NC State's remaining schedule is soft, BC and Wake at home with trips to GT and FSU. It's doubtful State goes any less than 3-1 in those games, which puts them at 11-7, we would have to sweep our remaining games to move up above them, we do have the tiebreak there. Virginia's schedule is more difficult than NC State's as they still have to host Duke, and go to BC and FSU before hosting the Terps. Assuming Duke beats Virginia at home, it's possible for us to go into Virginia with a chance to move ahead of the Cavs, with a win, since our Duke win gives us the tiebreaker in that scenario. UNC plays out basically the same way but their schedule is more favorable than UVA's going to Clemson, but hosting Duke and FSU, with a road game at our place in between. Any scenario which has us moving up from the 6th spot requires a minimum of a 3-1 finish with wins over both Duke and UNC. That or a complete and utter collapse by NC State, which is possible, they are State, but isn't likely considering their remaining schedule.
It is probably more important and more likely to hold onto the spot we currently have. Being in the sixth spot as opposed to the seventh, allows you to avoid Miami or Duke until Saturday. FSU has UNC, UVA, NC State and Wake down the stretch, but only one road game, at UNC.
A sixth seed seems the most likely, with a 5th or 4th possible but no likely. Dropping down into the 7th spot is possible as well.
