For those of you who still believe Mark Turgeon is the man for the job, I am here to tell you that you are dead wrong. Maybe we don't have the talent to be an elite team, but it starts and ends with Turgeon.
Let's start with the fact we have no identity as a team, that falls all on the coach. Since Mark Turgeon has taken the helm, we have never made an opposing team play "our" brand of basketball. Because frankly we don't know how we want to play.
We have no transition offense - aside from Dez bulldozing his way to the hoop. A good team should have a primary fast break and secondary transition options. The Terps very rarely show any organization or hustle in transition. That is not on the players, it's bad coaching.
Our half court offense is mostly sloppy motion with the occasional set play. Motion can work great when you have smart players and good passers, we do not have those players but Turgeon hardly makes any adjustments to the scheme.
So he is a "good recruiter" - don't get me wrong I am all for getting talented prospects - but could another coach not bring in similar talent; these guys aren't world beaters. I would also like to argue that he will take any 4 start recruit that will sign on the dotted line, but doesn't look for guys that will fit well together. Switching to the UVA/Wisconsin match up last night was like night and day. Bo Ryan clearly recruits players that fit a system, something Maryland does not have. They are decisive with the ball and KNOW what they want to achieve on both ends of the court. Maryland seems to be playing pick-up basketball compared to a well coached team.
Believe it or not I don't hate Turgeon, I just know hes not the guy for the job. I find it hard to believe that a guy who coached under some of the all-time greats doesn't know how to run an efficient offense, but the proof is in the pudding. Maryland basketball fans should not have to watch this ugly display for another year, let alone 2 or 3 more years.
When we don't make the NCAA Tournament this year, he needs to go. If you want what is best for the future of Terps basketball get behind this and let it known that Turgeon Must Go!
