I think the biggest misconception out there is that the Terps guard/sf's are hurting them the most. It is my opinion that the guards/sf's are carrying the load for this team, which in turn only adds more pressure. Not only are some playing out of position because of the point guard situation; I would suggest they have been tasked to mask this team’s biggest deficiency, their big men.
Shaq Cleare and Chuck Mitchell are holding this club back.
Shaq to date is a huge disappointment. His defensive rotations are pitiful and he is too slow to guard quicker PF’s or C’s. Not to mention, his hands are terrible and his overall offensive skillset is lacking (and I am trying to be nice here). I would guess that 95% of Shaq’s career points have been easy put backs. Chuck has shown to have a knack for rebounding and flashes of post game ability but his defense is suspect at best. He is a below the rim, undersized power forward who cannot keep up with rotations as well. Furthermore, both Shaq and Chuck are bad passers in the post. You cannot run an offense without your Big’s making efficient passes from the post. These two have not shown me the ability to keep the ball moving. They literally CLOG the offense because of this. Ball movement from any position on the floor is critical to the success of any offense. These are two critical recruits who are not producing and even worse not coming close to expectations.
Honorable mentions go to Evan Smotrycz and Jonathan Graham. While Evan has proved he can score and rebound consistently he has also proved a consistent defensive liability and poor decision maker on offense. His effort and body language the past two games were an embarrassment and I would have benched him just for that. The only positive I see right now is J Graham. His energy and court sense are an unexpected boon for this team. Too bad he should be our 4th or 5th option and is slowly creeping up to 1 or 2.
