Now after the latest home loss to a nonconference opponent that was suppose to be a easy win, turned out to be just that easy and a win. This is the latest of red flags that are starting to make fans doubt Mark Turgeon has the ability to bring an NCAA tournament team to College Park. Now, I'm not quite into the panic button pushing mode, but the lack of results is starting to wear a little thin when it comes to pathetic losses! Is Boston a chump team, NO, but should the Terps lose to a team at home that just lost to MEAC team Norfolk State, HELL NO!!!
The Terps stand at 7-5 with 2 remaining "cupcake" games left. Use that term lightly. To me the biggest difference between the team and NCAA caliber teams of the past for one is depth. With Seth Allen on the sidelines the Terps legitamately have a 7 man rotation that expands to 9 with Graham and Ram filling in to give breaks, but dont full yourself this team goes 7 deep and with Shaq's extreme inability to be consistent and competitive in most outings, I venture to say Maryland has a true 6 man rotation. Maryland has 4 players average just at 30 minutes a game and for college that is a big number. This will continue to hurt Maryland as the season continues with fatigue and the inability to bring fresh players off the bench to be competitive against better conference foes. Needless to say this team is in trouble.
Seth Allen is coming back in a handful of weeks and I for one thought that he would be a huge difference maker, but now I'm not thinking anything near that first thought. Seth will come back and help, sure, but at what level who knows. In order for the Terps to be competitive in the ACC, Allen will need to average 15 and 8. Thats a tall order considering he's a sophomore and coming back from a broken foot. We need a player at the PG, that can not only create for others, but bring an outside presence. So if you add Seth that give Maryland 8 Division 1 caliber players that can contribute this year and too many of them are inconsistent at best. This is going to be probably Turge's worst year as Maryland's HC.
In ending, I dont think Turge will get fired and I dont think he deserves it this year. A team with no seniors and 3 juniors, with only 1 of those juniors actually being a Terp for 3 years is hard to say we have leadership. Turge inherited an empty shell of a team and it takes time to replenish this program. Maryland didnt land any of the instant program changers the first 3 years in recruiting, but the talent level has improved dramatically and with the class of 2014 coming in this will give Maryland a roster of Division 1 caliber athletes. Next year is the year for the Terps and Turgeon to prove they can compete at this level and compete in the NCAA tourney.
