In some ways, you can't blame them; it probably came as a shock to all the Terrapin coaches, as the move would force them to become acquainted with new opponents and had the potential to disrupt recruiting. However, both Mark and Brenda apparently have come around to the move, as neither's recruiting appears to have been harmed. (Moreover, both are from the Midwest and aren't unfamiliar with that part of the country.)
Something else about that story is interesting -- this comment made in an email by James L. Shea, chairman of the Board of Regents:
"For some time, I have been bothered that these 'traditional rivalries' have provoked toxic reactions from abusive language at the games to riots and car burnings after victories. ... Maybe the most significant result will be that we have disrupted the fan base and that a new base, equally dedicated to excellence and success but more civilized, will take its place."
"Disrupting the fan base"...in other words, ending both the Duke obsession and the "you suck" mentality.
