The DC economy and what it means for UMD


There is an interesting article in the Washington Post this morning about the growing startup industry in DC. The crux of the article is that the DC economy is diversifying beyond just being a government town. If a large portion of the newly diversified DC economy is going to revolve around tech startups, UMD is in a really good place to launch, nurture, and contribute the talent and resources necessary for that industry. UMD has really strong business and computer science programs and is one of the top engineering universities in the US.

I'm not sure what the state is doing to ensure that the next tech hub lands in the DC-Baltimore-Annapolis triangle and not NoVa, but it's not hard to see this as a huge opportunity for the university. Hopefully it's able to capitalize.
