Being 61 years old and a long time Terp football season ticket holder, I've seen things go up and down through the years with our football program and hope that our Terp fortunes will somehow get better. What concerns me with the current season, Coach Edsall and our team going into the Big Ten conference next year is that I see a definite escalating depressing atmosphere with our fan base. I deeply respect Coach Edsall and his approach but I'm alarmed at what I'm hearing in the stands. My original group of season ticket holders around me that once tailgated with around 30 people has now dwindled to around 12 die-hard fans. These are facts that our Athletic Director, like it or not, must consider when reviewing the way forward. I've been going to Maryland Terp games since the early 1960's and have been to many memorable ones including the great comeback against Miami down in the Orange Bowl. In fact, the only time that I didn't at least go to one Maryland game was during the 3 years I was in the Army during the Vietnam War but I always wrote home asking for the latest news and scores. While were on the subject of Terp games from afar, I wonder if the current administration ever had a plan in place for the difficulty of fans and parents of athletes travelling the long distances to these far away Big Ten schools. Let's see, I think I'll get in the car with the kids and drive to Michigan or Minnesota next Friday night for a game like I do now to Charlottesville or the Carolinas! I hope I'm wrong but the future, from my experienced position, is that some changes are in order to keep the empty seats in the stadium from getting larger. What also scares me is that our Athletic Director can merely leave, as was recently reported, and leave us with a mess that will take years to rectify. Well, I'll renew my 3 season tickets again next year but it's getting increasingly difficult combating my wife's pleas to use that money for something like another weeks vacation. You know, something that doesn't leave me depressed for the next week.
