So last night I went to a Wheeler High School basketball game(they start Hoop early here in Atlanta). Wheeler is Charles Mitchell's former high school, as well as the current high school of Terp Targets/top 20 Juniors Jaylen Brown and Daniel Giddens. So I walk in to the gym wearing my Maryland pullover and immediately get asked by a number of people "hey how is Chuck doing", so I say foul-shouting not withstanding he is doing great. Then I walk by and say hello to Brian Gregory the Georgia Tech head coach, who gives me a nod - I assumed in acknowledgment of my Maryland pullover. Wheeler has 5 or 6 Division 1 players on their team and are currently ranked anywhere from 11-19 in the National High School Rankings depending on the ranking service. Even with Brown and Giddens on the court, the best player by far in yesterdays game was Elijah Staley-a Senior who is going to Mississippi State to play both Football (QB) and basketball. Ironically he had originally committed to Vandy and James Franklin but supposedly Vandy wasn't going to let him play basketball as well, so he changed to Miss St. He is about 6'7 and was absolutely dominant last night, had about 6 or 7 dunks and was very good around the rim. In regards to Brown and Giddens. Brown had for him what I would consider a very poor game, but you can certainly see the talent, he is about 6'6 and has great ball skills and had an amazing tomahawk dunk that brought the house down (and this was the opponents gym). He took off from about 8 feet away and tomahawked, it was sick. Giddens is pretty raw, but good around the basket and plays with a mean streak which I like. He is pretty strong for his frame. He actually got called for a technical on a dunk as he did a pull up. Another interesting tidbit, I spoke with Staley's dad at halftime-and I asked him if he and Chuck are buddies and he told me yes they are great friends. He also said that if Maryland had spoken with him that it would have been pretty likely that he would have come to Maryland, thats how good friends they are. I found that interesting-not that we necesarily needed him in either sport-as we have a QB in the class rated higher and also he isn't rated as high in hoops as any of our recruits but just found it interesting that we didn't at least reach out.
