I am posting for my first time to defend coach Edsall. I continue to read about "loyal" supporters of coach Edsall and how they have now gone from supporting him to jumping off the band wagon. I have a difficult time people you use the word "loyal" and a man that has done nothing wrong to some of you other than lose football games.
I played football from 1998-2002 and enjoy every minute of my time at the University of Maryland. I enjoyed the highs and lows of many experiences throughout my career. I had finally gone back to Maryland for the first time in 11 years with my wife (former Maryland softball player) and my two boys (3 and 1).
On Friday before the Syracuse game I was able to meet with my former position coach who currently still coaches for Maryland. I received a tour of the entire football complex and I would like to add how the complex has changed in the past 11 years. During the tour I was able to meet all the new coaches along with coach Edsall. I was overwhelmed with all the generous welcoming back greets I received from the coaches. I was surprised that on a Friday before a conference game how coach Edsall took 10-15 minutes out of his day to speak with a player that he never coached! Coach Edsall explained the direction of the program and discussed all the future plans of the program. During the tour I met with many of the current football players and each one I met all greeted my family the same way. Wonderfully well-spoken gentlemen that opened up and spoke freely about the support they have for the direction of the program.
After the tour I thanked everyone for allowing me to tour the facilities and I went to our hotel for the night. To shorten the story we ended up staying at the same hotel as the players. My family and I were coming from the pool and when we walked onto the elevator to go up to the rooms. Surprise it was coach Edsall and a few other people. Coach Edsall again greeted my family speaking to us as if we were great friends and we had been friends for many years.
That night we were having dinner in the hotel and during dinner a young man sat next to us that was at the game this week on a recruiting visit. I was able to speak with this individual and this young man was well spoken just like the rest of the players at Maryland. I guess this is the reason why I felt the need to post tonight. Why I bring this up is that coach Edsall is bringing in guys that are buying into his program. His program might not be the direction as what everyone wants but it’s his direction. When I played for coach Vandy we struggled the first few years with very poor records, but his last two years we were extremely close to becoming bowl eligible. Again why I state this is that it didn’t matter the coach we had in 2001. The team we had was ready to win and prepared to win. Yes coach Friedgen brought in coaches that got the most out of us and brought in new schemes to help us to win as well. I truly believe that we would have been just as successful with coach Vandy as we were with coach Friedgen. That’s not taking anything away from coach Friedgen as he was a mastermind coach of X’s and O’s and I’m thankful for everything that I had learned from him as I learned many lifelong lessons from coach Friedgen.
So again I state this to anyone who has read through this boring message. Let’s give our coach one last year to prove his direction is correct. Maryland is close to bring in another great recruiting class with many talented players that will help Maryland get back to their winning ways. Let coach Edsall show that his hard work has paid off and put Maryland in the right direction. Let’s support the program that we all love and stand by this team.
