I have heard (and read) an awful lot of complaining about how bad this team looks, and I agree that this offense looks frightening at times. Still, I think a lot of people are missing, or unfairly writing off ,how dominant this defense has looked. Give credit where it's due. This team is legit on D.
So far, we've played six ACC teams. Not a single team has hit 40% from the field. Not one single team. And we've played one of the toughest schedules in the ACC so far. At some point, it's not luck or teams playing down to our level of competition.
For me, one of the biggest strengths has been our perimeter D. I think a lot of people are missing this because they focus on a couple of stretches where people have caught fire from deep against us. Against UNC and BC, especially, there were stretches where we had a lot of threes go in against us. To some extent, though, that's going to happen. When you play elite 3-point shooters with quick releases, there's only so much that we can do. Overall, we're looking pretty good in locking down the 3-pt line and very good at preventing teams from getting multiple looks in each possession. Every team we've faced has scored under it's season average in 3P%.
The defense is keeping us in games. The offense is preventing us from putting games away. This team is never going to be an offensive juggernaut, but it doesn't need to be. Even some slight improvement can turn this offense from abysmal to below average (which in all likelihood, would have won us at least 1-2 more games). If this offense can improve to ACC average (not impossible, especially given the youth and room for improvement), this team is very frightening.
