A Few Thoughts on the Terps now and in the Future

The first thing is this team exudes youth. With youth comes inexperience and shaky play especially against tougher competition like the ACC. The team continues to struggle to hit consistently from the outside, protect the ball, and avoid slow starts.

There are several benefits from this young team. The first is that this team is the youngest in the league and they are gaining the most valuable thing which is experience. This team does not give up and with the way this team has played the past four games there have been several opportunities to do so. The biggest and easiest thing that needs and can change is hitting shots. It only takes one game and confidence will be back if they can start hitting shots. The defense has been sound, at first I thought the defensive side came from our offense played such so sloppy it was only contagious. I mean we have held some pretty high scoring team to less then 65 points.

There are a couple things I think need to happen, the first is Padgett needs to stay on the bench, his inability to do anything but his one post move limits our offensive flexibility tremendously. The next is and it will be the biggest one I will say and before everyone blows up listen to my rational. I think the Terps would be better without Alex Len. I will not be mad or even miss him next year and hope he gets selected in the lottery. Len has a similar problem as Padgett, he is limited in what he can do. Len is extremely long and his best attribute is rebounding, but he does lack quickness and gets out hustled for some boards. The hardest thing for Turgeon is to find a way to utilize him. Maryland has trouble shooting outside and this allows defenses to pack down the blocks, but Len does not have a strong down low game, he consistently gets pushed around and does not hold onto the ball and tours it over often. I know I'm being critical of Len, but he just seems to be an outcast in our offense.

There are many issues that need to change, but Len going pro will only help us since he is a one off and we don't have a backup with similar attributes so the team has to make adjustments to play with his game. I hope people truly understand basketball and this will make sense, but Len is a good ball player, but for a young team hard to make these adjustments.

I have faith Maryland can pull a couple more upsets and will be a tournament team. As long as we continue the heart, effort and defensive execution we will get there.
