So I am in my mid 40s and it seems to me that only recently DeMatha has been replaced as a powerhouse by GC. It also seemed to me that UMD was kind of considered as a community college for DeMatha grads - the school of last resort as the went to other schools. I knew quite a few Stags who went to schools without much in terms of athletic programs so they would root for MD from afar (which may justify the MD Pride marketing for non-alumni). I also recall several DeMatha grads who transferred to MD after going to school elsewhere - some of whom were athletes at DeMatha. The recent events and expulsions can be read about here (WaPo):
I'm not shocked - it was reserves, and from what I recall - DeMatha recruits starters but many of the reserves come from the general student population. I know a few of you dislike DeMatha and went to local Catholic schools. Maybe you can shed some insights.
1 - Has DeMatha declined as a powerhouse in FB?
2 - Has DeMatha declined as a powerhouse in BB? Or is it still the case that if you make the team at DeMatha, SOME school is gonna give you a four-year ride?
3 - Do DeMatha athletes still seem to look at MD as less than a desirable destination? The only current FB or BB Terp I can think of is Kenny Tate, and I really can't think of a recent BB recruit. Back in the day when I was at UMD, Adrian Branch was DeMatha guy. And Dunbar (Balt) vs. DeMatha was a game that drew thousands.
I don't think this latest issue is a death knell and imho teenage boys with money are going to try to..ahem...have fun. Not sure that any of the kids involved was an athlete on scholly, but the kids' parents might be huge donors and such. Still, an incident like this may or not motivate other parents to push their kids into staying closer to home.
